Magnetic drain plug

This is kind of a “just out of curiosity” question. I recently changed the oil in my car and mislaid the magnetic drain plug I had been using since its rebuild (about 25000 miles ago.) I put the stock plug back in until I could locate a new magnetic one. Then it occurred to me, do I really need another magnetic one? I know they’re useful during engine break in as they catch all the metal shavings/flakes. But would a normal engine produce enough steel sediment to require a magnetic drain plug?

If anything it could give you an early indication that something is going south.

Why would you NOT want to use the magnetic plug ?

We use them in all of our 'Supercases'. Do you NEED one? No. Is there a reason to want one...absolutely. I say get one; better to have one and never need it than the alternative.
