Need starter ideas for Continental 162 (Lincoln welder) motor
I bought a 1949 Lincoln Shorthood welder and it does not have an electric starter. It is getting very hold trying to crank start it (how it was from the factory). This is only about 28ish horsepower and looking for other ideas to get it started. Was wondering about the viability of using something like an impact with the hammers removed or an air motor. Is this outrageous and impossible? Just for curiosity I tried it with my Earthquake electric impact and all it does it hammer on it and doesn't turn motor over at all. Trying to go to a later model block with the correct flywheel and such is way too much money and work. Cannot just add on the factory starter. Any ideas?

I remember someone attaching an electric motor to a lever arm with a belt and spring. The belt wrapped around the crank pulley, if you have one. He pulled the lever against the spring to tension the belt on the crank, and pushed a button to turn the motor on. When it started, he let up on the lever, and the spring released the tension on the belt so that the motor wasn't spinning.

Some older riding lawn mowers had starter generators that we're belt driven. After starting the engine, they charged up the battery. They are not the torquiest things, starting out slowly, then picked up steam, but worked.
