There isn't just one large nut that holds the fan clutch on .
You need to remove the 4 nuts on the short studs circled in red in Silver Surfer's post of your photo. These are the same 4 nuts that also hold the water pump pulley to the front of the water pump, so you will likely have to take the tension off the serpentine belt in order to re-assemble everything, but it can often be done without removing belt tension.
Once you have the fan and clutch sub-assembly off the vehicl, there are 4 short bolts that hold the fan blade assembly to the fan clutch itself. Remove those, replace clutch, and re-assemble in the reverse order.

|Silver Surfer||Use a long screw driver and wedge it in between the nuts and clutch shaft (red circle) being careful not to mangle the threads. Then use a box wrench to remove the nuts (red circle). Then the entire assembly comes off. Then use a wrench to remove the fan from the clutch (blue line).|

Fan clutch removal... no 'big nut' visible...
So being winter here in Michigan I figure I could replace the fan clutch in my 1996 s10. 2.2 4 banger 5 speed manual. I pulled the fan shroud and looking down at the fan there should be a large nut just in front of the pulley that is used to loosen the fan clutch. I'm not seeing it, or feeling it. Where the shaft widens near the waterpump pulley it feels pretty smooth and round. Do I put vise grips on the fan shaft to remove the existing fan clutch? Supposedly these are often on super tight, and considering it's 18 years old and this is salty Michigan... I'm sure it's on there pretty well. Any ideas?
