DanTwoLakes #15 thread? That's the lightest industrial thread size there is. For car interiors you need to use bonded nylon or polyester at least size 69 and go up from there. Size 69 is 4 times thicker than size 15. Normal boat covers and tarps are sewed with at least size 138. If you think 15 is too thick, your needles are way too small, or you have the size wrong.

The position of the bobbin case has nothing to do with the timing of a sewing machine. You can really damage the machine by trying to "fix" something that doesn't need fixing. The machine is timed correctly when the hook just starts to pass the scarf of the needle (the little cutout on the needle just above the eye) at the bottom of the machine's stroke. Before you destroy this sewing machine, take it to a professional, get it timed, have the tensions set correctly, and have them look for worn or broken parts. It'll be the best money you ever spent.

Did you get this problem sorted? I have the same problem and need some advice on how to set timing properly. I tried to move the bobbin assembly over to the right slightly to make a bigger gap, but I also knocked the timing out. I can't find a manual anywhere that discusses timing on a 545 or 145.
Also, what size thread are you using? I have just tried No.15 nylon thread but it seems too thick.
Hoping you can assist me please.

DanTwoLakes That piece is called the bobbin case control lever, and it opens and closes as the hook turns. Turn the hand wheel until it opens, and feed the thread through. Then let the machine pick up the bobbin thread. If it doesn't open, it may need to be adjusted slightly.

Etester The bobbin is threaded properly. I just need someone to handcrank their Pfaff and see if there is a space between that hockey stick shaped lever piece and the bobbin to let the thread pass through. I'm sure the 90 degree gears under the shuttle slipped but nothing else should have changed.

DanTwoLakes Are you sure you're threading the bobbin thread correctly? The bobbin thread has to go under the little spring steel tension on the side of the bobbin case.

Pfaff 545 Thread Problem

My first post on the forum. Mt Pfaff 545 slipped gears and went out of time. I've readjusted the gears so I've got the hook grabbing the needle thread ok, but when it rotates around with the thread, a small arm ( B/C Opener ?) touches the bobbin and will not allow the thread to pass through and creates a tangled mess . Sorry I don't know all the part names. Any manual I've looked at doesn't show that nor does any on line video. Its something I never paid attention to when it was running fine so I'm not sure exactly how its supposed to operate.
