I asked him today. He said he was still kind of getting used to it but said he liked it. He also said it was the easiest clear he had ever tried to blend.

He painted the front fenders with it last week. Up to this point, I had done most of the painting even though he had done all the hard work.

1971BB427 At least the frames are salvageable to make what you need for seats, and wont have to fit something modern into the '53!
That paint looks fantastic, and will be even better once it's finished!

John long I did run into one disappointment though. The seat backs are going to need more work than I originally thought.

The center hinge pin is weak on one and the springs are pretty crusty and brittle. I believe it makes sense to go ahead and eliminate the springs and switch to foam. no doubtI will be glad I did.

John long Went by and visited with Steve for a few minutes today. He was hard at it color sanding one of the front fenders.



The doors, deck lid and one other fender are color sanded and compounded. Compound only. No swirl mark remover or anything yet but it is cool, seeing what they are going to be.

John long The drivers back rest is next. The frames so far have been decent but the springs are pretty sad.

I think my plan to swap over to foam is a good one. When I get into the interior, all this will go. I will sand blast the frames and start over from scratch.




I'm not sure anyone can make heads or tails out of this picture but the lower corner of the back rest is pretty badly deteriorated.The drivers window was broken and the rain blowing in has taken it's toll.

John long While Steve is getting the front fenders ready for paint, I am trying to get a seat to sit on.

My intentions are to remove all the springs and convert the seat to 100% foam but that will have to wait until I get into the interior.



I got it stripped down and repaired several broken springs. Also, tied the springs together to stiffen them up a bit.

Added a layer of burlap to protect the foam and then a layer of one inch foam cut the the size of the seat.





I failed to get a picture but next came another layer of foam laminated to the first one. It was extended about three inches beyond frame, turned under and hog ringed to the spring assembly..

That is then covered with muslim, giving me a good foundation to sit on with an acceptable shape.

I bought a couple of inexpensive Mexican blankets to put over the seat but am going to hold off until I get the back rests in usable condition. Hopefully I can make the pattern align somewhat between the cushion and back rest.

Now that he knocked all the good shine off it he has moved on. Go figure..



I carried Steve up some color sanding paper I had today. We are planning on getting together next week and playing with the Chemical Guys compounds I have. I also bought a new set of Hex-Logic buffing pads when I painted the firewall. I really liked them but time will tell whether or not Steve likes them as well as I did.

He almost has the front clip ready to paint. This thing is going to be painted and cut and buffed before you know it.

NEW INTERIORS look's great Mr.John.. it's always a great feeling when you reach this point of the build and start to see that all the hard days and nights are paying off..You came a long ways and your headed down hill now.. It look's great..

John long Thanks guys. I was really apprehensive about painting it yesterday with it getting up to 98* or what ever it was. Man, I liked to melted in the paint booth.

I threw retarder in the third coat of clear and about 10% reducer plus retarder in the fourth coat. Apparently I guessed pretty well. It flowed out really well. It is a wonder I didn't drip sweat all over it.

When I started this project, I said I was going to use all SPI products on the car. I have done that, with the exception of the Wanda for the Champaign part. I have to say, I have no regrets. Every product I used from SPI has been first class, as well as reasonably priced. Not to mention the service and tech support they offer. It is rare, this day and time, to find any company so impressive to do business with.

idrivejunk I made out-loud man grunts of approval at the pics, John. Sure is great to see your vivid red convertible out in the sun. Its like seeing a favorite cartoon character come to life.
