|cseay1949||Bolted the headers and h-pipe on to check my clearances. On the driver side the header flange is 1/2" away from the original toe board, while on the driver side it is 2" into the original toe board. I like to keep at least 1.5" of clearance (a 2x4 on it's skinny edge is a good way to set clearance). That way if need be I could have a heat shield spaced 1/2" away from the body and still leave a 1" air gap to the exhaust. As you can see the tri-five chevy engine bay is a bit wider than the Mercedes.|

|cseay1949||The hinges partially retract under the cowl when the hood closes, so I am making little pocket recesses in the firewall for them.|

|cseay1949||About the only part of the original firewall that I am keeping is where the hood hinges mount. I cut out the flappers on each side for the heater cores/fresh air inlets (these cars came with an early form of Dual Zone Climate Control -- two heater cores in two heater boxes and the driver and passenger could individually control the temp on their side).|

OK then, you have a fair comparison, so other than your engine sitting further forward, you are definitely in the ball park.

It's pretty darn close! Door panel to door panel the Mercedes is a couple inches wider.

|cseay1949||This is what a Fox Mustang floor pan looks like in it's natural habitat .. this is a T5 pan which is slightly higher than the AOD pan in the shifter area. I have been looking at reference photos like this and from other cars (shoebox Fords, tri-five Chevy, early Mustangs and Camaros) trying to get an idea of where I want the toe boards and firewall to be. Going to need to get a milk crate and a pie tin and figure out what feels comfy!|

Fair enough, if you are not chasing space then I'm sure it wont matter too much.
Boy, it sure looks roomy under there for now.
Still with more stuff to pass thru I'm sure any extra space will disappear.

It probably doesn't need to be that tall .. even though it is a Fox Mustang automatic floor pan meant for an AOD just like I'm using, I think my trans is lower and farther forward in relation to the pan than it would be on a Fox. The width is just right for clearing the throttle valve linkage on the left and the cooler lines on the right, and the way the Fox Mustang H-pipe tucks close to the trans. I figure the extra clearance on top should both help keep the interior cool and help with engine cooling/airflow out of the engine compartment. And God forbid I ever need to pull the trans out it should be a fairly easy task.
