|EOD Guy||This was the one I was looking at, their push button switch is a simple momentary switch with three LEDs in it. My plan was to buy their system and hack their switch and modify my cigar lighter, which I don't use, so that it becomes the switch and leave the now non-functional key switch in the dash so that it looks bone stock and has the "push to start" function etc...... I think it'll be pretty trick.|

Check out this site for a kit precisionconnections to install a secured type push button start that uses a fob that is carried by the driver so the push button only responds to the driver's fob.
They sell several different kits.

|EOD Guy||The push button for start is avail in many places, just make sure it's contacts are rated for 15-30 amps. The continuous duty solenoid is also avail just about anywhere, you can search this forum for remote battery ford type solenoid. If you go that route, I'd suggest you put a ignition coil kill switch, if you don't anybody could borrow your ride permanently. You'll also need an accy circuit that is isolated from the ignition circuit, if you try and put them all on one circuit/switch you might experience what is called run-on.....which is.... engine will not shut off with the switch because it's being back-fed from the alt and the only way to shut it off is to disconnect the battery or pull the coil wire.|

push button start
Thanks for the ideas. I've been rewiring the hole truck it was a mess. I have relays for electric fan,headlights,drl all under the hood. New fuse panels etc. Found a site [how-to-build-hotrods.com] that was very good on wiring up your basics. I would like to just have the push button and a good continuous duty switch to run the acc. and run wires if possible.

Finally a question I can help with around here! I've spent 6 miserable years as an electrical system specialist in a Chevy dealer from 87-93.
If I am understanding what you want to do you just want a push button with no other key switch or toggle switch to turn the systems on and start it right?
If that is the case you need a dewhicky called a latching relay. GM used them in several places in their cars like power sun roofs and rear window defoggers before everything was run by computer. You give it a tickle of power and it closes and stays closed even if you take away the power to the control side. So the same button could operate your starter and latch this relay and you would be in business. The only problem is there is no way to shut it down without an off button to trip the relay back open....

As others have stated Relays..... If you want a home grown keyless ignition, push start etc...... then I'd use a continuous duty solenoid for the main "everything goes hot" switch instead of a bunch of relays etc........ including the hot source for the starter button, then individual relays to power things like lights, fuel pump etc......
There are key delete systems out there that replaces the key switch with a fob that you carry in your pocket, and when you get in range of the transducer, everything powers up at the push of a dash mounted button, push the button again and it goes to start then run...... just like modern push to start vehicles etc....... been looking at one for myself.

I did this on my engine run in stand. See pics. I would isolate and keep separate the ignition power (ignition power here = sending power to the distributor, coil, MSD box, etc). Then a simple push starter button to the starter solenoid. You can relay the starter button but not necessary cause that is what the starter solenoid is for. As for running the accessories, keep that on a separate switch too but as others have suggested find an underhood relay center from ebay. There are tons of them out there. I got one from a Pontiac SSEi car and it came with 8 relays, and 12 maxi fuses for less than 20 bucks.Plus it was not big and bulky, everything was in-line. Have you priced maxifuses lately or even one factory real GM relay? Use something like this for you junction under the hood for the accessories. Hope you have some sort of anti-theft design in your set up, like a remote main battery cut off or something. Hope this helps.

I try to use a central power distribution box from a newer model car and mod it to fit, or you can buy one already premade but they are expensive. So basically your switches are just used for triggers for the relays and are not used for driving the loads. Quality parts are a must, nothing kills your good mood then a $0.02 cent toggle getting stuck on for the starter.
I have done this type of mod a few times and you need to sit down and think about how this will all go together beforehand, not just placement of parts but that means circuit protection as well, fuses need to be calculated for the proper load. If you are not using an ignition switch, remember you will need 3 circuits, Acc, Run, and Start.
How are you at wiring? If you need more help I can go a lot deeper into the subject.

push button start
I'm doing 1950 mercury truck custom for a friend and it has most of the today acc. power windows,shaved doors,led lighting etc. He wants me to install push button start without a ignition switch. Now I know I will have to install an toggle or rocker switch but should I be using relays or what? I'm not to sure on how to wire it up. Any help would be great.
