In the middle of a '48 Ford Coupe. I am died in the wool Blue Oval. I went 5.0 FI, 4R70W w/M II front- disc/drum. I recently finished my '63 Fairlane SC 347 stroker with a narrowed 8.8 trac lok rear, so I used the open '63 rear in the coupe since it's going to be a cruiser. 57" wide fit great under the '48.

1955_chevy Yea I that is about exactly how the conversation went so hopefully will start building mine soon. I also have a s10 steering column that has tilt and column shift that would be perfect just need to figure out if there is any oem gearboxes I can mate to the frame and then she can atleast get power steering also. Anybody figured out what gearboxes hook up to these cars fairly easy.

I recommend an S-60 from Strange LOL might as well get the 4 piston disc brakes and powdercoating, right?

1955_chevy I also did get a disc brake kit on the front the other day and forgot to get some interior pics I will try to get you some this week.

1955_chevy I still have it in my 55 I Just need to finish building the replacement for my 55 and then I guess plan to use that one for the merc.

AutoGear '55 chevy rear axle is 60" approximately and is plenty strong enough for a 327/TH350 for the wife to cruise. Rear axles are 4.11, 3.70 and 3.55 from the factory.

I believe 56 and 7 are the same width, but they have beefier axle shafts, posi, etc.

Since its 60", you'll find a lot more info in the tri-5 chevy forums. Do you have the one from your chevy??

1955_chevy Yes 5x4.75 pattern is correct and I am going to say I want 60" wheel mount to wheel mount and I drum is fine with me. I also am not making a power house just basically a 327 rebuilt so maybe 260 horsepower. Will just be a driver that I can let the wife drive and I can get into Frog follies with something.

I see you want a gm lug pattern(4.75x5 I'm assuming)
What is the rear axle width you need?
Drums or disc wanted?
How much power do you plan to put down?

48 Merc build

I'm on my third Merc coupe now. First was a 46 with a warmed over 53 flathead. Then a 46 with a 327, stock tranny and rear. Have a 48 now, 350/350. Fatman M2,discs on the front. Leaf's in back from SAC, Camaro rear. P/S, air, tilt, tint. It's a 10 footer, but its mine.

[email protected] Love it.. My very first Hot rod experience was a 47 Merc coupe. Nailhead Buick powered.. Crunch those old Ford gearboxes! But then they were only $15.00 at the bone yards..

That's cool . . .

Couple of guys in my area have similar vintage Mopars with updated drivetrains, and pretty stock bodies - dechromed, wheels, etc. They're really a neat look!!!

1955_chevy It will be just more of a driver than anything. I am really just thinking a flat primer and roll on. But who knows years down the road if money allows. The wife will drive it more than me I have my ls1 55 with a turbo that I play with.

1955_chevy I will take some more pictures of the interior hopefully Sunday I will lower it back down and start tearing the front apart and getting all my brake stuff on. What all things have you done for rear axle setups since you have done several. I also think I am going to leave all the chrome on it since I have all of it in great shape for the age.
