68NovaSS Very easy to make your own piston stop from an old spark plug and piece of round stock, just ensure the stop is securely epoxied or spot welded to the plug.

ron29 Hi guys will I got a piston stop tool and now I got the timing good car is running better I have not time it at around 3000 rpms with degree tape. but it is running good. I have never use the degree tape dose make it any better when you time it at the high rpms, I am not drag race it. just want to say thanks

ron29 Thanks guys for the information on that I have order a piston stop so I will chek it out this weekend to see if that will fix it I will let you know.

Beautiful engine, like Harley Davidsons, I always thought the W motor from Chevy was work of industrial art.

Is the timing original or at least aged? Your symptoms description would have me looking at wear and stretch. Also, on the upfront list of things would be slippage of the bonded outer ring of the damper. Another high on my list would be wear or failure of the key or crank keyway.

vinniekq2 Is this a brand new issue?have you verified tdc with a piston stop tool?

chevy 409 Harmonic Balancer

hi guys hope someone can help I replaced the Harmonic Balancer be cause when you would try to time it the mark on the balancer would be aroud 3 inchs above the timimg cover marker so I put a new one on and it dose the same thing I also put a new distributor in to. the engine is not built up it is stock if it dose have aftermarket cam it is not all that maybe like an rv cam. the motor is in a 29 model a
