This is just me messing around, I wanted to have a (65 Mustang) seat in it for a sec to get my rings and bearings. Or gather marbles lost therein perhaps.



Now this here turned out less sanitary than envisioned but approximately as slick as anticipated. Vertical quarter flange between hinges sets mostly down into a step I carved in the thick wall tubing there. Oh yeah and I trimmed and cleaned up the sill.



By the way, long have I yearned to weld that spot. Or rather, those spots. Sayeth the aspiring fabricator in me. However, with all the sandwiched epoxy in there, welding went like poo for the most part.

Fill in of notches behind hinge arms get welded with door off, and that will be when I approach door stops. The hinge tubes come with a hole for a through bolt but it's location may not jive with the scene. In any event, I want them to look even when both open and seen from the front or back.

This one is a stick your head in driver window and look across, above the door-er. Clearance was tight over the front of the door top. The pic is just to show the arrangement with the simple angled strip there. As you see, row of plugsys planned for top of strip. Undecided at bottom. Could butt or leave it lapped. It has some overlap and some gap up there directly above the door. At least both sides are fresh metal if I decide to overhead butt weld it.

idrivejunk Miscellaneous welding today, plus odds and ends. Coworker who was going to get the 51 inside called in today.

There was still a hinge slot here, an unfinished inside corner, countersunk hinge screw holes not shown, and a tight spot at front of top gap-



Extensive burr use at collar level certainly ain't my favorite task.



Stuffed meats in the interest of viewing pleasure for all parties.

Just seeing if you'd wake up without me hollerin'. Footloose Jr has become fairly ninja with the big artillery, he had lots of practice on the Biscayne. I passed down my secret weapon, about a thirty something inch section of oh say one inch white plastic thick wall pipe (PVC) that happens to hold true when eyeballed as an archer would an arrow. Wielded properly, it makes show cars. Probably less difficult to learn than using a two handed sword in a fray, but the same principle.

Hey now theres another opportunity for controversy...

Rubber bands are rubber bands and stagecoach wheels are that. True enough. Appearance-wise theres a balance thats fairly individual to the ride and desired character. But the counterintuitive part I've had to digest is that sidewall height has a great deal less effect on ride quality than meets the grew-up-on-bias-plies eyes. To a point, stuff don't ride rougher with 55s than 70s. Its more about sprung weight, spring and shock tuning, etc.

Will you break a big cast hoop and wreck when a stamped rim bends and you pull over safely? Absolutely. How the tire fits the wheel is a player there, too.

So while theres nothing quite like cushing down the road on steelys and G-70s, a blindfold test vs 18s wearing 50s might register naught. Turn sharp and you'll know pretty quick. Appearancewise I like sidewall a'plenty. But just enough sidewall is plenty. The Catalina is just of epic proportions for shock value but the wheels, while large, don't appear to be wrapped in vacuum cleaner belts at least.

And yeah, in epoxy stage that car looked like it hit a a buckshot filled IED on the road to Baghdad. Perforated. I been making "starlight" lampshades outta the old floors, see? Yeah.

Your sanding dude really does a good job of blocking. Those quarter shots look great.
And yes, there's some nice metal underneath as the foundation of course.

Well now I done gone and did it, made Pugsy grumpy maybe by saying you blew it. I'd like to clarify (and confuse) my standing on this hot but timeless political point of manual transmissions just for the sake of wintertime discussion fodder and tomfoolery. Horseplay, that is.

I have yet but to dip toes in the shallow end of the EFI/OD tech pool and same can be said of hop-ups. When I was a kid, I knew my contact points and 2G carbs. As a young man, HEI/Q-Jet was my bag. Since then, theres been one EPS carb and a couple rides with headers and aluminum intakes. All stock iron engines but had a couple used rebuilds with cams. I catch me a greatbigo enjoy off even a 3 on the tree, leastwise if'n it works good. I only ever graduated to Saginaw 4 speed.

TH400/12bolt in a full frame or TH350/10bolt in a subframe are both golden to me with CID/4bbl to match and some glasspacks. I don't require big tires to be happy. Last computer I could work on was about a Pentium4 and cut my teeth on DOS 5.0, but I can't quite grasp fuel trims yet. But daily driving with a carb is no longer an option I have. Thats just me and my commute.

So much for the run-on bibliography nobody asked for. Its raining, forgive me. To my point:

I travel under more than 60 traffic lights a day in a community exploding with new population. 20 miles (one hour) each way, completely crossing four cities, a county and a half, and dodging the mainstream with my as-the-crow-flies scenic cow pasture and sunset lover routes.

Like Goober used to say "Gas n oil's one thing, tires is another matter entire!". Slave clutch is one thing, mechanical is another matter entire. Hydraulic throwout bearing? Two grand to cruise 70? Maaan, thems kinda girlier ways of going about getting the stick stamp on your man card. Maximum man card credits would be racy idle close ratio 4.11s and a left pedal that would chunk you into the back seat without your lap belt. The kind you stand on impatiently if you are headed to work.

Say for example you have a whippy fourth gen F body with six gears and pinky toe third pedal. Meh, less card stamps there. Lamont Sanford (the son on the show with Redd Foxx) gets more stamps. So I don't know where the opinions of others lie but there lies mine and hey... we just put away a couple minutes together, didn't we? Fret not, heres some quarter patch pix I left out because the one I wanted came out poorly lit and still has yellow tape. Patched the left also, just smaller but every bit as long. Not posting pics reserved because I thought I might need an excuse to ramble over the weekend, I assure you.



Yes, it is a murderous endeavor to remove or install a rear wheel.



I want to hear from the wheels too big crowd. Too big, in reality? The whole dadblame thing is cartoony. Did you see in the video how its less than half a foot too tall to run under that semi trailer? Way shorter than my GT. Go kart esque ride height but that may change.

Well, we can't quite have you spinning your tachs like tetherballs all over town now can we?

You have the right idea.

I can have fun with a three speed and two barrel. You just can't be in love with your clutch around town.

TH400s are the only thing that will live under my foot. The one that lives there now is weary though. If I could just use it up then use up the backup one which is low miles... well hell I'd be a hundred but then I'd feel ready to hunt up a Muncie. Or a 5 gear.

My blown Pontiac has me singing the busted trans blues right now. One wrong move on a FWD trans instantly transforms them to the ol box-o-rocks.

Hummm. Grumpy doesn't have a problem with people running up his tail pipe. I guess the problem is with my driving style.

BTW. Roadster is 5 speed. 53 Bel Air is 4 speed, Truck is 5 speed. But....Barb's Jag is automatic 6 speed.

I think John has three pedals in his truck perhaps. A car with an automatic and mean loud truck with stick would suit me pretty good.
Yep, the 'velle is a slushbox. Suits me just fine, too. 350 horse 396, TH400, 3.36 posi.

Roger that sigh. Up, up and away but you move onward and upward. Yes sir, you do that. Three pedal thing.

So the '70 SS is a slushbox like my GP?

I think John has three pedals in his truck perhaps. A car with an automatic and mean loud truck with stick would suit me pretty good.

On a daily driver, I only kinda agree... I miss my 3rd pedal ride, at least until I get hung up in traffic around the Naval base. That sucks, very much bad. I've got dad's '57 for my 3-pedal fix, and I'll be putting a 5 speed in it eventually. Sigh....
