I don't think so, it never feels soft as if air were in there. It's either as soft as normal hydro boost brakes are, or the pedal grabs at the top of the stroke and is hard as hell.
It sort of feels like ... picture the back of the master cylinder with a tapered edge around the outer side of the piston and the hole in the center. It feels as if somehow the *push rod* comes out of the hole and rides on the edge of the piston ... that's when the pedal is extra high and extra hard. Then it sort of feels like it slips off the edge of the piston and finds it's place in the center of master cylinder piston.
The second time I replaced the hydro boost, I also changed the master cylinder and specifically inspected the area I described above and there was no sign of anything rubbing against the tapered part of the cylinder.
The bad part is that when replacing the unit, you have to reuse the rod and a special clip that is made to go on and not off, like a push on nut. That clip I believe keeps the rod aligned in the center, but if I have to reuse it again it'll probably break. Maybe a chevy dealer could get a new clip?
And just a little while ago today it got the high hard pedal and stayed there. When I stopped at a red light I pressed real hard on the pedal and it went down to normal with a lot of resistance the whole way while making a grinding/scraping feel and sound all the way.

Hydro Boost brakes
This isn't on a hot rod but thought I'd give this a try. 2000 chevy 3500 Express van. The brake pedal started feeling funny, sometimes it would give a real higher than normal pedal and stop quick, but if I put more pressure onto the pedal it drops an inch or so then seems to work normally. When it drops, you can feel something mechanical sort of grinding for lack of a better word. I found somewhere online that is a symptom of the hydro boost going bad so I replaced it. All was well for a week or two and it started doing the same thing, so I installed another rebuilt one. Worked well for a week or two then again the same thing. So am I getting crappy units or do I have a different problem?
