Thanks for that. I know I got the gaskets on right because they were very clearly marked "FRONT." It is a good thing they were marked otherwise I would probably have gotten that wrong too. Just kidding. I studied that pretty carefully. --John--

If you get the heads on bacwards, you will need to get the thread inserts to bring them down to 7/16thread.

Now if you have non EGR heads, it may not have the larger holes.

Other than that, the heads are symetrycal

I checked them over really thoroughly and they have the same exact bolt holes in both ends of each head. That really got me thinking as to what could be the difference and that's why I asked the question. I don't remember any of the books I read mentioning the heads being symmetrical and interchangeable. Thanks for your very valuable input. --John--

Can you really smart folks verify that it is ok that I may have put them back on the wrong side?

LATECH Chances are, i your engine is a 77, they arent going to be present. Earlier ford engines used a plate under the carb for the EGR, so...

Just check them in case they are later model heads.

techinspector1 Yeah, the only thing(s) that would make any difference would be things like water temp sensors and such and like you said, emission controls that would have to bolt to something else and might not fit if you got the heads switched. Otherwise, there is no difference in the operation of the motor.
