Glasspacks such as redhots or cherry bombs are well how do I put this nicely?
Junk. Absolute junk.
If you want quiet install a Walker muffler. They are lowcost, good quality, and factory or factory equivalent in many models.
If you want performance then a chambered design will slightly lessen sound while allowing for a somewhat flow through design(they all have some counter flow baffling)
You have the true flow through at higher rpm designs such as reflective sound cancling (RSC) in a Corsa muffler or a spring that is pushed back allowing the exhaust to bypass sound deading all together like in a Porter muffler.
As far as 2 mufflers. I have use mufflers in place of cats as "spark arrestors" for years.
Non emmisions state before anyones shorts get twisted.
The flow through chambered design of say a flowmaster 40 can hold together much better then a cat when your running very rich. After the flowmaster I could run a Walker or other quiet muffler that would be destroyed by a single backfire if not for the flowmaster lessening the explosion(I have a pile).
If you want both performance and a quiet idle in a single muffler then a Porter muffler is my go to.
This puppy is not no lightweight. It is overbuilt, heavy, able to take years of backfiring and other abuse, just laughing the entire time at what would have destroyed a weaker muffler.
They have a spring inside that routes the exhaust through baffling allowing for a modest reduction in sound at idle. But when you get on that thing the spring is forced back and they sound open.
Exhaust is a science. But generally if you install porters in the center of the ride and don't point the tips at the ground you will end up with a similar sound with a similar engine.
If this is to loud for your liking. Then Walkers are in your future. Just make sure you install a spark arrestor of some type such as a flow through muffler or even baffled insert before the walker as they will seperate without one the first time you run rich backfiring tuning in a new carb etc.

I have a Volvo 122s rat rod like sedan. I’m running a 2 1/4 single exhaust with a glass pack & Dyonomax muffler. I think it is a turbo muffler, but don’t remember. It is annoyingly too loud for my taste now. I’m thinking of adding a second turbo muffler. Any thoughts on this, i.e. loss of significant power, not much difference, etc?
