cerial I made it. You can buy similar things. But I really was not impressed with most of those designs.

If your garage has a strong enough beam a chain hoist makes putting engines on engine stands much easier.

I have set engine stand legs like the ones linked below on top of a engine stand cart linked below.

This does work to adjust the height of a engine easy and get the thing onto a stand with most legs. But it is a smaller engine thing as your talking about 500lbs so you could potentially tip the engine.

They do make a 1000lb one. But I have no experience with it. Measure your spacing on your legs to make sure it will work. But it could be an option.

cerial After tipping a 2 ton on uneven ground and breaking a pickup crane. I wanted something better.

I built this contraption a couple years ago This is the last thing I lifted with it. Note I am lifting that on the side of a hill.

Also lifted the rear at that receiver to remove the axle with leaf springs and tires attached.

It attaches to a 2" receiver with 6" of height adjustment (pintle mount to pintle mount)then you lower 4 2000lb legs to even the platform to almost any grade. I basically welded a 2 ton hoist onto a platform which sits on a receiver base sitting on a 6"x1.5" wall chunk or steel that sits in a 6.25" pipe .25 wall pipe. I then cut down and welded a semi rim to the bottom of that base for added stability. It allows the base to rotate 360 degrees. Overbuilt is a understatement the whole setup weighs around 700lbs. The legs do all the work. Even lifting the weight off the back of the pickup allowing even 1/2 ton trucks or suv's to be used. It gives me 5 points of stability and the ability to level to any surface to say grab a engine out of a truck in the middle of some buddies woods if need be. The thing is tall and skinny allowing it to fit inside a 80"x33" door. But I store it outside at this point.

Being able to lift 1000lbs and control ably rotate it 180 to set it in the back of a truck or 90 degrees to drop it on a engine hoist makes things so much easier. In addition I use a harbor freight 1 1/2 ton chain hoist which allows for very controlled lifting/lowering and even some deflection.

This chain hoist in the link above will make it possible to deflect your engine over onto a stand. It allows you to use a typical 2 ton hoist then use the length of chain to maneuver the engine over onto the stand. I am only talking about 3" of deflection here using one buddy to push the engine while you put the bolts in. But it makes a world of difference in getting that thing onto the stand. Just take note that when your pushing the engine over "deflecting it" you can tip the hoist over. But generally using the chain hoist allows for a more stable deflection then other methods.

Once you use that chain hoist you will wonder why you did not get one sooner. The thing just makes many jobs so much easier. I have not side loaded anything like pulling a car onto a trailer with it. But it is rated for that to some degree and is much more user friendly then some cable come alongs or needing to play around wiring up a winch if you are say renting the trailer to grab a car from out of state.

Foperfoauto Yep. You can set the engine down momentarily on a tire, extend the boom, readjust and then mount up to the stand. If you happen to have an XL size old guy hanging around the shop, you can have him stand on the back of the lift to keep it from tipping

spacer blocks

put some spacer blocks on your engine stand so the engine stand can ride over the hoist legs . when you slide them
face to face you will have a little bit of offset but you should be able to make it work. one of my engine stands I built has large castors and will roll on hard packed dirt when there is not enough space in the shop.

rocknrod Like I said, I just need to buy a stand like this I think. The legs front and back are just too wide on the one I borrowed.

motor to stand

what i did ... while motor in air i removed the mounting portion from the stand and bolted it up.. then lifted the stand to mate the lower stand up and dropped the motor while moving it around to allow sitting on floor... a pain but worked. another thing i did when i pulled my motor from '66 fairlane... get a air/hyd piston. hook to air compressor a hit the trigger and sit back.. no more pump...pump..pump for 20 minutes...harbor freight for 80 bucks

rocknrod Ya on my C10 I have to raise the wheels on blocks to get the legs under the A-arms, both in stock configuration and tubular A-arms.

johnsongrass1 I made my boom longer on the picker because the front end of out race cars with bumper and 12” engine setback make it a pain in the....
Also added swivel casters on all four for ease of use.
In the big shop I use a chain fall.
While ithe engine is hanging, I’ll zip the bolt down on the spindle and then lift the stand to slide it on, lower both slowly. I’ve dropped them before. That sucks. Don’t do that.

rocknrod The legs on the engine stand are too wide to get the engine close enough to the hook. Probably just get a 1,000 lb stand with a narrower set of front legs. I think they're mis-matched. The stand is one a friend lent to me. No biggie.

22george Would it work to raise the engine stand on blocks, attach engine to it, lift engine and stand, remove blocks, and twist stand when lowering to clear hoist? (I put a Hook on my cherry picker that swivels)

Engine Hoist to Engine Stand

Has anyone had their engine hanging from the cherry picker engine hoist and tried to get the engine stand close enough to transfer the engine to the stand from the hoist?
My stand wont get close enough to the hoist. The legs on the stand are too wide and the hoist legs too narrow.
Anyone else have this happen to them?
