schnitz Being careful when out in the shop should almost be second nature, but I'll bet we all cut a corner or two now and then. I sliced my finger yesterday evening (not a bad slice) and I did it solely by rushing a "little project".

Stay safe.

123pugsy Went to Home Depot to check out the Zep. Its got properties like oven cleaner. You will need to wear a respirator just as you should using solvents ,but this stuff will also burn your skin.

Looks like I'm back to Varsol.

I poured some into a metal container and it doesn't burn when applying a flame. If on a piece of wood it burns good.

I'll have to be careful I guess.

Clueman, I edited 9 of your posts because 10 times of posting the same thing makes the thread extremely hard to read and very difficult to follow. I get the feeling it was just a computer glitch.

pmeisel We used Zep in our maintenance cribs, each major machining department had its own parts washer, maintenance bench, etc.

In an older established area, it might be cleaning parts that had been in the machine for years, so the grunge could be pretty deep. The stuff is good but not magic, if the grunge is deep enough time and elbow grease will be required.

Clueman: I'd like to find out more about this stuff. Zep is a real old name in the auto trades, so it might be real good??
What have you tried to clean with it; like real old caked on stuff??

I need to change mine real soon.

Not a bad price considering. Has anyone else tried it. How fast does it evaporate?

123pugsy I got pricing from CornSolv and its only about $30.00 a gallon.
Bio or not I'll be forgetting about that.

I think I'll check Home Depot for that ZEP stuff.

Thinner yes.

Diesel, it needs a host for it to burn or very, very hot temperatures.
Try it, you can't light it with a match. On it's own, at room temperature, it is not volatile at all.
It works very well as a degreaser. It just dissolves gloves and it stinks.
Got to be the cheapest of the options out there except some of the water based detergents.

Edit: I'm pretty sure it was paint thinner as it was about a year ago that I bought it.
I found at Home Depot a cleaner that works great. It made by ZEP comes in a 1 gallon or less plastic container. The stuff brings me back to Saftey clean days. You mx it with water and it makes 5 gallons. Passed my burn test. When it's new wear gloves will burn a bit. Says it's BIO and all that green stuff. Home depot also has a citrus brand that works prettty good also. Thinner or diesel? may as well use gas...lmao
