If you're talking about using a t-5 it's an easy great swap to reduce the rpm's and better fuel economy., Go to the www.inliners.org website and search around the drivetrain forum and you should find all the info you need.

Or if you don't like the prices, try a 3 spd + overdrive Ford unit. They used them a lot in the late 70's early 80's to get better fuel economy. It is a toploader case with the 3-4 lever inverted so Ford only changed 1 gear to get you a .8 overdrive (20% reduction). It does have a pretty wide 2-3 shift though. They are relatively plentiful and cheap and will be a very easy bolt in swap. Used in trucks, Granadas and Mavericks mostly, it seems. If you go junkyard shopping, look for a toploader with 1 shift lever on the trans pointing down instead of up and you found your boy. All the usual toploader bits work (incl. overhaul parts).
