I've done several pearls and they were three stage, but these were factory colors. First, the primer color will must be consistent over the whole body, then the base coat will also have a large effect of the final color, next is the pearl which needs to go on so that there are no "puddles" of pearl. Last is the clear. I'm no expert but have noticed everything must be consistent in order to have a one color paint job. Putting the pearl in the clear may work well. Real painters on here should answer.

What I don't understand about your question is that putting pearl in the clear and then putting more clear over it it's STILL a "mid coat" three stage.

But the real "mid coat" is the way to go, you have more control. Do some test panels, then you will see.

What type of pearl you using, a dry powder type?
If so, it usually gets mixed with a intercoat clear to
help keep the film build low.
That'll hold it till the clear coat.

Easiest is to use the "mid coat" clear. It amounts to clear basecoat. I use a "cup gun" for pearls, I can drop a couple nuts in the cup to keep the pearl stirred up. My experience with gravity feed gun and dry pearl is the pearl falls out of suspension between coats, and spits out in clumps.
