I went ahead and bought a quick fuel 570 cfm carb. The issue is resolved now. It runs, idles, and putts down the road better then ever and with the 570cfm ventures it has a ton more throttle response.
More throttle response than a Q-Jet? That idle circuit transitioning to part open throttle must have been really screwing things up!
My 454 with a fair sized cam will sometimes put-put away when cold with no choke at about 350 rpm. Sounds pretty cool but can't drive it that way, it stalls when letting off the throttle fast. Sort of sounds like an old old tractor but louder.
