SBC Damper - Timing Tab

I have a 400 SBC that I am building up with a fair number of new parts.

The short block was together when I received it but I am fairly sure it is put together correctly. It came with a chrome timing cover that I believe came from Summit (can confirm if it matters).

I installed a new Summit 8" damper using the oven heating method and all seemed to go together pretty nice.

Problem is when I try to install the timing tab it overlaps the entire width of the damper so that the timing indications on the forward edge are beyond the damper and you can not see the marks on the damper.

It seems all the SBC timing indicators extend the same amount.

Does this mean I have the damper installed incorrectly?

Any insight would be appreciated.

If the timing tab is a bolt on, get a smaller/shorter one. Otherwise verify the damper is the right one for that motor.

You might try adding a TDC mark down the front of the damper. Or as said, trim the tab you have.

Are you using a 400 balancer as they are different..external balance and different size.

I had the same problem with mine and most timing tabs go out to far as the chrome ones go so I just took mine and cut it short and made a v grove where the tdc location is and now when I use my timing light I put a mark of paint across the timing degree line I looking for on the balancer and look for the line when setting timing.

Yes it is a 400 balancer.

Sounds like this is not a new problem so I will make it work. The damper has degree markings so all I really need is the ability to see the damper markings when aligned with the "0" mark on the indicator.

If the damper is degreed you need only to make (or buy) a rigid pointer attached to the front of the engine. Align it to the damper TDC line w/cylinder #1 at TDC on compression stroke and you're set.
