Smokey Yunick`s SBC

180 crank sb Chevy from 1959, sounds weird and looks funny with the way the pistons are on the bores.

What was the benefit of the flat crank back in the day?

Henry was a brilliant man. Read some stories about him and his race crew, some are hilarious.

A better balance of the firing order, there isn't the classic problem of two adjacent cylinders firing only 90 degrees apart as in 5 and 7 or move the problem to 4 and 2 in GM speak. This does a lot for improved breathing and reduces the amount of counterweight on the crank so it has a lower moment of inertia thus accelerates faster. The downside to a cross plane is the the longer duration between thrust strokes which the average mom and pop driver would feel as vibration.
