TBI Cam

I need help choosing a cam best suited for my application. It's going in a 5.7 TBI manual transmission. How big a cam can I use with the computer. It will be used a lot for towing and hauling. I plan on adding a chip, upgrading the throtty body, and
adding vortec heads. Right now the project is a blank slate. So any component configuration ideas would be great also. Thanks.

camshaft

Hi,
what kind of cam do you want, Hydraulic, solid, roller, hydraulic roller, mushroom?

what do you want, more low speed torque, more mid-range power?

as for the engine I'm assuming that it's all stock, if not then there are more questions on the engine beside the year.

what kind of vehicle is it, weight, axle ratio, transmission, minimum rpm to
maximum rpm. overdrive?

tire size?

Not knowing these things makes it hard to recommend a cam, but if you
just want a recommendation, I would say,
Lunati Voodoo LUN-60101LK cam & lifter kit. this is a Hydraulic Flat Tappet
Dur. 213-I/219-E advertised dur 256-I/ 262-E, L.S. 112
Lift 0.454-I/468-E

He mentioned all the info needed, he`s running a TBI and the stock computer, you can`t stick any cam in a computerized fuelie vehicle and expect it to run. I would call comp cams, crane cams, and Isky cams, and speak with there techies, I personally recommend Isky. There tech people will take down your whole combo and pick out the best cam for your engine.
You are somewhat limited to what cam you can use with a TBI and computer, Isky had just the cam I needed for my 4.3 V6 with TBI, which was a hydraulic roller and it cost me some bucks. Your cam shouldn`t be as much as I`m sure it`s a flat tappet hydraulic.

Get a roller cam out of 5.7 vortec.
Cheap, plentiful, and easy.
Just make sure your block is machined for the lifter retainer first.

Hi,
The cam I recommended is a computer & fi compatible cam, & will work very
well for towing.

I should have added more info. It is a full size 1/2 ton pickup. 5 speed manual transmission 4x4. Not sure of the gear ratio but it's pretty high geared. I would like to achieve good low end torque. I'm just not sure of the limitations of the TBI. The motor will have vortec heads, performer intake, 750 cfm tbi unit and custom prom.

For a TBI application, I would use a simple "white box" cam that everyone sells.

It features 204 intake duration, 214 exhaust, .420 intake lift and .440 exhaust.

I've used it on performance TBI engines, and it absoutely works great with the stock computer, has a good idle and delivers increased low end snap a great deal.

You can buy that cam at O'reillys or Autozone, it's part number is MTC-1, and sells for about 50 bucks.

Wouldn't hurt to look into a small factory roller cam like the GM marine cam, part number 14097395, if your block is already set up for one. It's also used in the GM Ram Jet 350 and HT 383 crate engines. With some minor head modifications, you could use 1.6:1 rockers.
