Timing?

2004 Chevrolet 350, when coming to a full stop or backing up it sounds exactly like a diesel engine, pinging and rattling and shaking. Anyone heard of anything like that? My mechanic was stumped.

I have not. The pinging and dieseling wouldn't come from loose mounts tho would it?

You mentioned shaking which is why i mentioned motor mounts. Dieseling could be a few things such as your timing being to advanced, or carbon build up on a piston or two. Carb not adjusted right (carb throttle plates open too wide, idle speed screw not adjusted right), running cheap gas in a high SCR motor can be the case to for it too. Pinging could be a few things too such as again the gas you are using, motor not getting cooled down like it should, carb ims not adjusted right, spark timing. What is the history on this motor, have you done some work to it recently, did this just start happening?

Does it have the electronics on it? or have you changed it over to carbs?

I've done very little with this motor and this issue just started happening. Since I've changed the oil, plugs and wires. My mechanic thought it had something to do with the timing, when in gear and at full stop it's pinging so hard it sounds like a diesel and shakes and rattles. Same with slow reverse. Driving slow or with speed it's just fine. He thought the timing chain may have finally stretched far enough that it's throwing off the timing settings. It's got over 210K on it so I'm just wondering what the next step should be.
Thanks for you thoughts.

take the cover off the bottom of the bellhousing..

rap the flex plate with a hammer.. does it buzz... it might be broken..

you might want to spend the extra time with extreme care and proper sized tools and undo the 3 torque converter bolts.. push the converter back slightly away from the flex plate.. rap the flex plate with a hammer again it will make an odd sound if its broken..

you should be able to inspect more of it with a really bright flashlight now..

please use extreme care to reinstall the torque converter bolts. that you get 2 or the 3 installed without fully tightening them.. leaving them like 1 turn loose.. so you have some chance in heck of getting the third one in.. you can tighten the third one completely.. then tighten the other two..

that is how i inspect flex plates without removing the transmission. .
