Valve spring height, help with my math.

I have a set of World Sportsman iron heads for this 327 Im building. I have some Scorpion intakes and exhausts. .200 longer. Valve spring specs [email protected] installed height. I measure 2.005 with no shims. Seems like I need .130 spring shims. That doesn't seem right. Even with -.50 keepers Im still. 080 out.Am I measureing wrong? or do I have wrong springs?

Probably not, you just have some really long valves. Would +0.100" not have worked?

Like the Inspector pointed out, should have used just +.100" longer valves for those heads.

-.050" keepers and .080" shim is the best you are going to be able to do without hunting through several dozen different spring retainer manufacturers catalogs, to see if they have anything that installs shorter on the valvestem.

Another option that may help is a spring locator or cup. It depends on the size of your valve stem guide/boss for location on head as well as spring pocket/spring OD. Comp has them for both spring ID locators and spring OD cups. They all look to be .060" thick. May help to keep from having a slopy stack of shims?
I know they are recommended for aluminum heads, but not sure about iron. Don't know why not? I printed a page out of the old pdf catalog I have and scanned it for a jpeg. Hope you can read if your interested. It looks ok if you increase your zoom settings.
FWIW
Good luck!

You can certainly use a cup on an iron head, just as long as the spring pocket is machined large enough on the O.D. for the cup to fit down in the pocket.

If you need to shim plus the cup, the shim has to be put under the cup(or the locator, if you choose to use those instead of cups).

I.D. of either the cup or the locator has to be nearly the same as the valveguide O.D., to prevent too much "walking" around under the spring

Thanks for all the input. I found some locaters I think will work along with -.050 locks from Comp. Happy Thanksgiving to all my Hotrodder.com friends!
