What a great day!....Carb problem

May 23, 2015

Just signed up. I am putting in a new cam in my '83 Olds Cutlass Supreme. I got it running, kinda ..............

Have an electric Quad carb., and can't keep it running. Seems like it's runnin' outta gas??? Been doin' this stuff for over 60 years but first time using this carb. It's got me by the shorthairs!!!

Clogged fuel filter is the first thing I would address.

What I was eluding to was that anything over stock would require a fatter idle setting.
The electronic q jet is set up pretty lean in the idle circuit so it wont support a large cam.
Idle channel restrictions and idle air bleeds will need work.
I have built many of those carb, but in the 80s, when you wanted more horsepower, you removed the CCC carb and dizzy and went with earlier non computer stuff
The plunger that operates the metering rods, also operates the Idle air bleed circuit via the screw in plunger in the center of the air horn.
It has its own adjustment upon assembly.
If that is out of adjustment or the seals are bad ,it will not give a good idle.
I don't recall exactly , but I would have to say that their are a metered set of holes somewhere in the idle circuit for air and fuel, as well as the Idle air bleed plunger
I would look to see ( I am sure there is ) in the intermediate housing (main body) for the idle channel tubes like a regualer Q jet.Pull them out and fatten up the holes.

E-Carb blues

Since I wrote that "help" message, I've done a bunch of research, Mr Lactech ................

And everything you said is correct. I've got the carb off and as I sell ARCHOIL to a lot of shops, I'll ask around tomorrow (5/26/15) I bid on one on ebay but one of those *******s that set up an automatic bid won it, but not until I "ran it up!"

I was thinking of getting one of those "hole" converters, to put on a Holley, but I don't want to spend those "cubic dollars" for a Holley. The car is just goin' for a few passes, but mostly drive-in "show-off time!"

As I say, "a bad day in Florida is better than the best day in Wisconsin!" Back in the day, I had the second largest speed shop in Milwaukee. What some times ................

Take a look at my website for some of my customers. FLORIDA LUBRICATION SOLUTIONS PUT THAT IN THE TOP SEARCH BAR, we're usually in the top 5 of the list.
