what guage sheet metal

I have a 1963 c10 short bed and I want to do some patch panels on the doors and was wondering what gauge sheet metal I should use .... any suggestions any one?

I think That should be 20 ga that is what I would use

Thanks for the advice can I get away with using 22 gauge that's all I been able to find around the town I live at

you can use 22 ga if I were you I would start my weld on the heaver gage metal so you dont burn a hole in the panel

Around here I can only find 16 and 22 gauge. If you can, try to find the 16. It would make a better repair as it's stronger. I've used the 22, but wouldn't trust it for anything more than a small patch as it will be weaker and bend easily.

I bet the metal is closer to 18 gauge. You need to keep the patch the same as the rest of the metal because the lighter of the 2 will warp more and cause more bodywork. If you have to, cut the patch out of an old body panel. You can buy a sheetmetal gauge tool at most hardware stores. Then you will know for sure.
