wiring led pilot lights? there 22mm panel lights

I had to put a liquid cooled Kawasaki engine in my grandfathers lawn tractor after the B&S in it went bang. He liked it enough that it's worth me putting the time in... I already got it bolted in and running BUT, the idiot lights from the original tractor that the engine came from ( JD LX188, it was my parts tractor ) had no place on the dash, so I bought 3 22mm LED pilot lights off Ebay. they have screw terminals and are marked with a wiring diagram I think, but it just says X1 and X2, they cross to the middle with a 20MA marking.. does it matter which side goes where? I've always gone by the rule that if you power an LED backwards, it burns up
