63 Dodge "TAMELESS" - Jan 18, 2012

Hello you all..back in '97 I bought a '63 Dodge 330 sedan..wasn't an ordinary 330, it was an original MaxWedge 426 stage II, with a 3 spd floor shifted manual box...the original owner was just a kid when he had his sister buy it for him from Grand Spaulding Dodge, or better known as "Mr Norms"..

You see, we will call him Bob, was 15 at the time and couldn't own or purchase a new car at that age..so Technically he was the second owner..when he turned 16, title transfer was done...This car never saw the streets as a daily driver..Bob raced "TAMELESS", as he named it, at tracks such as US30, Oswego, some at Union Grove and the Amphitheater!!...most pictures from the Amphitheater shows a white 63 Dodge in A/Stock and A/SS, that's "TAMELESS"..

Bob was turning low 12's in basically stock trim until he caught the GASSER bug in which he cut off the front frame rails, welded on 2x3 rails and installed parallel leaf sprung straight axle..the inner fender wells along with the K member, Torsion bars and any thing else he could cut out, were thrown in the trash..the engine was slightly modified, the rear wheel ell housings were mini tubbed badly and a big hole was cut in the trunk floor in which a VW style gas tank was installed.. Bob managed to run 11's and was only defeated once by another Dodge, being one of the rarest .. A '64 Dodge 4 dr HEMI 4spd in which Don Garlits owns one and I think there were only 14 of these?, anyways, that '64 Dodge HEMI just squeaked Bob at the top end.. Bob had told me that he heard this thing coming..wonderful stories ..

A friend of mine, who new that I was looking to build a Nostalgia/SS, kept his eyes wide open for me...he, I'll call him Ron, saw "TAMELESS" in Rural Elgin, sitting under a tree with a FOR SALE sign..Ron inquired about it and gave me a call..I jumped at it and drove as quick as possible with check book in hand to Elgin, about an hours drive.. I couldn't miss "TAMELESS" sitting there winking at me... The car hadn't been started in years and the engine looked it!..the body is rust free and only had some slight damage to the driver's door in which the previous owner backed his car into it!..The interior was gutted with only 2 bucket seats.."TAMELESS" was painted a red with graphics from the 80's period by another previous owner in Wisconsin.. I paid the wanting price and brought a trailer the next day..He was now mine!!..

I started tinkering with the engine, to see if I could get it to fire up..the original 426 stageII cross ram engine was replaced with a healthy 440 as Bob kinda blew the original engine up..it had a dual point distributor, Offenhauser 360 intake, Holley 850 and some wicked looking Super Stock snaking headers!..I fired it up and HOLY CRAP!!..this thing had one wicked cam!..the idle wouldn't drop below 1,200 rpm!..
so I took "TAMELESS" out in the street, in front of my house and lined HIM up straight..foot braked it, and stabbed the gas..WHOA!!..It picked up the front end!!..This is one wicked machine I thought..I put "TAMELESS" away in a dark corner in the garage, where He stayed for almost 4 years..

In 2000 I got re-married and my wife, turns out she's a lead foot, wants to go racing..I knew it would take some time getting "TAMELESS" built to comply with rules and safety, so I bought a '71 Duster that was known as the "MAX Wedge Duster"..turns out it too needed upgrading..so I spent 9 weeks of intensive re-building of "MAX"..somewhere on this forum should be a post Titled "MAX and ME", written by my wife, who raced HIM..(all my cars are HIM's)..in the meantime I ordered parts to build a 572 inch mega block, 1,000HP monster for "TAMELESS"...

The Duster was sold as a roller and I now have the 499 inch, 850HP engine along with the CRT built 727 trans and misc. parts to finish "TAMELESS"...all the 572 parts were sold off along with the trans that I had ordered built by API.. I chassied and back halved the car.. a 9" with Strange axles and aluminum center was purchased.."TAMELESS" now has a 4-link rear suspension with all the goodies and the front suspension is now coil over and a K member with all the conversion parts from Bill Riley..it's called an AlterKtion..the car will have Wilwood brakes on all 4..I seriously doubt if the car will weigh 2,800lbs..with the 499 it will be capable of running 8's, so the build is aimed at those rules.. A CM cage will be constructed..

I will add more as I go along with the build..by the way..I'm also going to drive this monster on the street!!....4.57 gears spooled and 32" slicks...NO PROBLEM....
