Driveshaft Install - May 14, 2008

Last night we installed the driveshaft and buttoned up the center cover of the rear end, filled it with lube, and installed the rear wheels (15 inch rims that we had from an old s-10); man those old tires back on the car sure looked good – we are getting so close to having a rolling chassis! Next weekend we are headed to the salvage yard for a quick ratio steering box. My research indicates that the Monte Carlo SS (85 and up) has a 12.7 : 1 ratio box and almost the same max turning ratio (pitman arm travels about 39 degrees on the MC vs. 43 degrees on the 65-66 A-Body cars) The Monte Carlo also requires 24-30 foot pounds of effort to move vs. the 15-21 on the old A-Body. The Salvage yard has an 85 Monte Carlo SS that was in good shape before an interior fire, so they should have what I need. More soon.
