The next step will be to cover all the backer boards with foam padding. But before I do that, I will be laying out two design elements for the interior. These will be “inserts†that are incorporated into the upholstery on the door panels and the rear quarter panel area which is just behind the door on each side of the car.
Photo # 1. The first insert will be for the rear quarter area. On the interior side I will mimicking the area of the exterior of the car shown at the arrow. The insert will be the approximate size and shape of the highlighted panel area just behind the door. On a normal sedan this would be a window, but on the delivery version, the window is solid metal. But I want to “hint†at the window on the inside of the car.
Photo # 2. I temporarily install the rear quarter backer boards in the car so I can use the top and bottom of the door window opening to determine the top and bottom of the insert. I also determine where the front and back of the insert look best and mark those on the board as well. I am also going to incorporate some upholstered “slots†in this insert which I also now sketch onto the backer board. This picture shows the backer board back out of the car with my slot design drawn on it.
Photo # 3. I will be making my inserts out of 1/8" aluminum sheet. I was given this nice big piece of aluminum by a friend who had it stored in his garage for many years. Over that time it got pretty badly banged around and scratched up on all sides. So it will take some work later to get in polished up...but it was free, so I’m using it.
