I am looking at building around 600hp. I have a set of 353049 454 corvette heads. They are completely bare, and would need cleaned up and are made for the small valves.

My question, is: would it be worth buying all new parts, grinding them out for big valves, and getting a port/polish? Or just buying some new aluminum heads already together with the big valves?

You can make 600 hp w/049 heads, but you can do it w/aluminum heads w/less cam and compression. If your budget allow, go w/the aftermarket heads. The difference in cost between them wouldn't be enough to make me keep the cast iron production heads.

I'd stay clear of the cheap off shore heads, though.

600hp (normally aspirated) is a pretty big number for a 454. This would require to spin the 454 up a little more than standard components can handle. And the heads would need to flow 300 cfms, which is a hard number to get from a set of 049's.

I would go with aftermarket aluminum heads and go with a 496 while you are at it. Lots of 600hp 496 cid builds out on the web (do a search).

A 454 will make about 10% less than a 496 when built with the same stuff. So a 600hp 494 build would make 540hp 454 if build the same (in theory).

those 305 heads are nice heads.I would consider the 290 oval ports also? depends on the application? How did you arrive at 600 hp as a number you need? Of course a bigger engine makes for a milder driver. If you dont have an engine,look for bigger. If you have a 454 core,what pieces do you own now?

What I have is a 1990 454ss. Right now it has a fairly built 350 in it and it came with the original engine in pieces. One of the previous owners blew the rod bearings very early on so the block is in great condition. All the in ternals are corroded from sitting in a box for over 10 years. The only thing I have useable is a new in box scat 9000 series crank, and the bare 049 heads. (these parts came with the truck).

600hp is a goal. But if 500 is alot cheaper then thats more then enough power. I don't plan on driving this truck much on the street. Just to shows and a sunday drive.

Right now im in the planning stages of my build. Just getting an idea of what others have done and know works.

I built a fun 454 based on an LS-5 short block,forged pistons,830 holley,Z-55 solid isky cam,victor oval port intake,hooker street headers,in a Z-28 camaro,turbo 400,with slicks ran 11.9s at 111 mph.Made about 400 hp or a little less.car weighed 3550 after going on a diet
