I have a 10 bolt chev rear out of a 1973 full size chevy wagon. Am considering narrowing it down and using in my 55 chev project. Sometime back I tried to narrow a 10 bolt from a Nova and found it had tapered splines making it difficult to narrow and went to a ford 9" instead. Does anyone know if this one would likely have tapered axle splines or not and also would this be much stronger than the stock 55 rear. Going with a slightly beefed 350 and 4 speed in the car.

The 73 rear may be a bit stronger/ but like the other 10 bolt you experienced. not worth the money involved.

If it's an 8.5" 10 bolt it's much stronger than the stock 55 rear. I don't know if it has tapered splines. If it is an 8.5" 10 bolt it has strength relatively close to a passenger car 12 bolt rear. It will surely handle your mild 350.

I agree a stock 8.5" 10 bolt will be more than adiquite. I even run a 8.5" 10 bolt in a big block nova with out any trouble.
