Well Im looking for a better set - like vortecs, but cant find any at a good deal right now.

I have a good set of 1410193 truck heads (old vortec style, swirl port) laying around and they have 1.94 1.5 valve and it looks like they have 170cc intake runners. I think they have 74cc chambers

To me it looks like that is alot better than my 76cc chamber, 151cc runner, 1.94 882 smog heads.

BTW I have just a slighty too big cam for what I got now(the compression) its a 224* .465 lift 114LSA. So im looking for just alittle bit more bottem end.

I firgure maybe a thin gasket and those 74cc chamber might get me up to 9.2ish? I have stock 8.5 now.

The 193 heads are not Vor-Tec style heads. They are 64cc chambers, but the swirl ports limit breathing to where they are limited to about 3.500-4,000 max. rpm. I'd check around at the boneyards for some Vor-Tecs before I put a lot of money in either of the sets of heads you have.

Well I found a set of 461 heads - 62 cc chambers with 194 valve that are ready to run for 300? I calculate 9.7ish CR with .020 gasket. With improved flow over the 882s. I think that would be better

The only problem I see is that they dont have accesory holes - I only need one hole for the powersteering pump. maybe i can get a shop to do just one? Does anyone know of any speacial bracket I can use a later style pump.

Oh yea, I dont want to get new stuff (rockers manifold etc.) for the vortecs. oh and they have stupid valve covers for a classic car

Are you already running the driver's side alternator brackets? If you run the older style p/s pump you should be able to find factory brackets to mount the p/s pump that don't require the accessory holes in the end of the heads.

The 193's you were considering use those same "stupid" valve covers...... Personally I like a lot of the aftermarket covers for the center bolt heads. The finned aluminum ones from Cal Custom (Summit) look very "classic" to me, they remind me of a custom cover for a 1950's Oldsmobile. There are also adpaters that will let you use the old perimeter style covers. I'm considering that route so I can use factory aluminum valve covers off a 1970 LT-1 350 on my Vortecs. But "each to his own".

No, I am using passenger side altenator and driver side power steer. I saw a way I can use the alternator without the accesory holes. But I can figure anything out for the pump. I think Ill just have a shop drill one hole for the mount. Or find another old style pump, or make a bracket.

Yes I know, But I already have the valve covers for 'em. I have seen those adapters...but at $80-100 for the pair. No.

882s are a good head to rework they flow well when ported and polished. the 193s from what i can see by looking at them look like a pretty good head also only bad thing is they have their own intake bolt pattern. and correct me if im wrong they are on 87-95 350s plus they also accept a 3/8 pushrod

Well, the 193s arnt the 8 bolt intake like the vortecs if thats what your thinking, they have the old style 12 bolt (6 on each side).

Not sure on the 3/8 pushrod, but I do have the pushrods that they were ran with.

He's right. I've seen people slot out the middle holes in the '85-earlier intakes to get them bolted on to the '86 and later heads and vice versa on TPI manifolds but I sure wouldn't do it. :nono:

193's are just a stock, post 87, GM head. The swirl ports make them useless for anything over 4500. They don't have 3/8 pushrods, tho the later models use drilled out push rod guides and self guided rail rockers like the vortec. MOST that I see are cracked!!

In your case a pair of MAGNAFLUXED 882's would be the best base for a street head. Port matched and upper port smoothing along with simple bowl work and a good valve job will perk up your engine.

Forget the 461's, you will have over $500.00 in the average pr. And they still don't fit anything late model!

Wow, I did not notice that those 2 in the middle were angled. Thank you for bring that to my attention. Man, I woulda bolted those one and I would have been so damn confused when I would try to bolt my intake on.

I placed a wanted ad on a local internat classified site for a set of 64cc heads. I got two calls within 10 mineutes of placing the ad. One guy has a set of 461 that have been ran for 4 years since a full rebuild for $300, and the other set is some vortecs with 70,000 miles on them (bottem end problems) and he wants $400 for those

Vortec takes a special manifold. Not the one you have.

I have been in the engine/machine shop business since the mid sixties and I just hate to see you young guys getting screwed on old "camel back" heads. They are worthless on newer stuff. Always need TONS of work and are not compatible with modern fuels.

During the summers I get many of the 461's in. "Just rebuilt" "only paid $250-400. for them". I want them cleaned and checked.. These usually need guides, seats, valves, and studs. THESE THINGS ARE OVER 40 YEARS OLD!!!!!

on a sbc 76cc head you have to mill 0.0059 to reduce chamber volume by 1cc

Most are safe to .020" But, then you can get into intake manifold fit problems

i forgot to tell you in post 15
amount to mill for proper intake alignment (per .010 inch cut on heads or block) is 0.0123 on a 76cc chamber head

Whats going on here? Tell these folks what gears you have and I am sure you will get a totally different answer. Scrape up the $140 for high 3. or low 4. gears and report back to us when your eye balls find their way back to the front of your head after being G'd to the back of your head from the gear swap. Your engine combo is is not the end of the world and could work with some gears.
