i just acquired a 1930 model a 2 door sedan, well almost. everything is there except the body. is this something that could be made into a hot rod? without spending a ton of money? what would it take to acquire a body? begginer questions i know. but i have to start somewhere. not looking to make a show car, just driveable as a hot rod. what are the first things i should do to make this happen. have 350 and th350.
thanks

The first thing you are going to have to do....if rust has not ruined the frame....you will need to clean it up and box the rails full length. You will need to add engine mounts for your 350 as well as a crossmember for yor tranny. Then you will have to decide on suspension upgrades. You will need to probably go with a aftermarket dropped axle and use either a hair pin or four bar system. You will need to upgrade to disc brakes on the front and rack and pinion steering, of course you will have to upgrade rear suspension and brakes as well , putting in either a Ford 9 inch rearend or a Chevy 10 bolt. Then you will have to come up with a body....either look for a original body ( expensive), or a reproduction body ( expensive). There is no way to build a hotrod cheap. If you do most all of the work and fabbing yourself it is very easy to get 10 grand or more in one. I have seen decent original bodys go for 5 grand. I saw a rusty basket case one bring 3 grand just the other day. To build something safe...that is legal for the street...its gonna take some money.

I guess you just acquired somebody's original chassis removed to build a rod project with the body.
That's how I used to get lots of chassis.
Is it still complete and original with the 4 cylinder and radiator and steering and transmission ans rearend and front end and wheels? DO you know if it runs or not? Lots of times these "cast-off" chassis can be gotten to run, and some run darn well, even though they may have been sitting a long time.
You might think about checking out the old time running gear and maybe making a neat 4banger rod. A set of 40-48 hydraulic brakes(and maybe it already has them) some new rubber and you've got a good start on some old time fun .
There are bodies for sale all the time at swap meets and you could probably even find something locally if you keep your eyes and ears open. Find you local Model A Restorer's club and ask if somebody has somethey they don't want. You may get a cowl section, a pair of doors, a tail piece from various folks.
That 200 inch flathead with a home made 2bbl manifold using a Ford staged 2bbl from a 2.3 4cylinder, OR TWO OF THEM, would make a fun piece to tour the town with. And if your hair is greased enough and your jeans are cuffed just right and your Camel pack is rolled up in your Tshirt sleeve, you just might get some action at the local drive-in, knowhatimean Vern?

1930 Model A

I Could Give It Away.......just Not Today. Besides I Made A Mistake Its A 31. I Hear Differing Advice On What Can And Cant Be Done. So Let Me Ask Some Basic Questions.. Question 1----- Keep The 4 Banger? Flathead V8? Or The 350 Which I Have Heard Is To Much Engine In Both Horsepower And Weight Even For A Boxed Frame. Some Of The Magazines Out There Say Dont Waste Your Time , Buy Aftermarket Frame. Question 2--- I Have Heard Of Speedway And Have A Catalogue In The Mail. Who Else Supplies Necessary Parts For Hotrodding. Question 3--- I Am On A Budget--low Dollar Budget And I Dont Mind Scrounging Thru Junk Yards(kinda Of Fun Really) And I Dont Want To Experiment With Front End Geometery Etc Etc And All The Other Pit Falls I Keep Hearing About Doing This. Is Their A Book That Details The Right Way Of Building A Hot Rod Using Used Parts From Other Cars And Building It The Right Safe Way? Iam Just Not Interested In Putting Together A Hot Rod All Mail Order New Stuff. Sorry For The Caps, Iam An Old Man And Its Easier To Read
