I am looking at a rear end out of a 1965 ford galaxie with a 427 4 speed. the rear end doesn't have a tag. I was wanting to know what gear ratio options came in the 1965. Thanks for the help.

From what I can gather the R code 427 Galaxie came standard with a 3.55 gear set, of course there were other ratio's available but I couldn't find a list. You might try going to "The Ford Galaxie Club of America" ....I'm sure those boys could tell you EVERYTHING about the car.

Without the tag It could have been changed, turn the drive shaft and count how many turns to have BOTH wheels turn one time, (locker) or how many times for ONE wheel to turn over TWO times (Non Locker )

About the only way to tell without a tag for sure is to pull the chunk out and count the gear teeth. That accomplishes a couple of other things besides determining the ratio - it also determines the axle spline count as well as which, if any Equa-loc or in a few cases, Detroit Locker plus the condition. The standard rear end if you didn't specify something else on your order sheet was a 3.50 (my local dealer and I had a fight about that problem on my '65 w/390 PI, I ordered an Equa-loc with 4.10s - they had to do a dealer install )

1965 R code rear-end ratio

Hi,
I order my R-Code in January of 1965 and it came with a
3:50/1 9" N case
I had my dealer order a 4:57 set for a Econoline and had them
installed. The dealer bought back the stock gears in trade
for the Econoline set, had to pay for the install tho. Them was
the good ole days!
I wish I could find out what happened to that car or if
someone has it now..
