I would think they would be the same. I know the 289,302,and 351W are all the same engine family. Being it's a Sunday I can't go to work and double check though. What type of 64 Ford are you woking on, it might of had a 289 in it originally. I thought the 302 didn't come out 'till around '68. But I'm not the best with trivia stuff, to much to keep track of.

depending on which year 289 early 289/260s had 5 bolt bellhouses and flywheels are different between early and mid years but if you have a 302 and a 68 289 chances are the flywheels and bellhouses will interchange

think you had a 235 v8 in 64 no 302 that year, 289 and 302 are same block different rods, 1/4 inch longer rod in a 302, same other wise. In 1964 ford had a small v8 think this is where your running into problems,I think there's a conversion kit (motor mounts for your switch)
also think the transmission bolt is unike for the little v8. Hopes this helps

1968 was the last year for 289 a few years ago I had a 68 galaxy convertable bought from the original owner it had a 289/3spd and was the original engine.302 rods are shorter than 289 rods5.0-302 5.1-289 the compression hight for both engines is the same meaning you can use 302 pistons in a 289 and visaversa. to find out what year the engine actually is look on the block just above the starter
