I already laughed about it last night.
Almost back to normal already after some tap a tap.

UPS just dropped off my lower quarter patches.
Dang hard drilling spot welds looking up. We'll see how it goes.

I hope the patch panels are at least a good quality and fit well.

John
Holy crap, no. I could have cut a piece of metal the same size, threw on the street in front of a bus and it woulda fit better. I've heard the stories and always wondered what the fellas were whinig about as everything I've used was close, and a bit of tap tap got it there. Not these. I have to take them to work and hit them in the brake press.

Wow... I didn't think anyone made a worse shaped panel than the one I bought for the Chevelle...
No kidding, eh?

I instilled some radius down the lower section. It's in the car so I can give the top bend about 5° more bend on the brake press.
It's sitting on the car quite nicely already. The length appears dead on, so not as bad as it looks....I hope....

Sneak preview. The patch panels will work fine.
Need to do some surgery underneath first so I'll only show the part that makes it look like I'm getting somewhere.

It's a shame I didn't have a magnet with me that day..........:-((

John
Ya really gotta stop frettin about that. I knew there were issues going in.

Patches, three required at wheelhouse where the kitty hair was. Man, is that some wonderful stuff, tough as nails and sticks to rust even. They should bottle that and sell it I tell you....
I had to heat it up to get it off. Not before I filled the garage with white powder.
D'OH!

Scary stuff just now. I was tacking across and of course the tacks kept drawing the panels together for overlap. Can't reach arm in with a dolly to tap a tap tap. Whacking one end of the patch panel down with a rubber mallet stretched the tacks a bit, but just past center, some grinding was called for but I got it all tacked. Gonna be wavy to heck when it's welded, no question about it.

A lttle POR15 and some primer on the inside surfaces. Weld thru primer on flanges.

Slowly welding the seam gives time to peel off the paint and Bondo from the tailgate while the welds cool off......
Some dents in the gate and the clowns added up to 5/16" thick Bondo instead of tap a tap, tapping the dents out a bit more.
Found a few small holes to fill while it's stripped down. One looks like rust hole but the other two look perfectly round like drilled or stamped holes.

Easy peel paint. Sweet.
I know I said I wouldn't stir the hornet's nest behind the passenger door, but, well, I guess you guys know me by now.
I have no clue if this was a dent or they tried to weld some rust pits and ended up creasing the the thing all the way up and blew holes in it to boot....sheesh.

Quarter panel patch finished welding. Well, all except a small bit where the patch panel fell short of the original.

Ouch. Almost looked Bondo-able in the pic above. Time to make up a custom dolly.

I got most of the quarter panel stripped, I also cut out the bad stuff. This gives two benefits. I got my arm inside to hold a dolly inside. All the dent puller holes shrunk the panel a lot. Slapper on dolly shows promise. I was too tired tonight so I stopped before I buggered it up. The second thing is the patch will bring the bent zig zag part straight and true again. If I need to planish, I'll cut an access hole from inside the car for the dolly.
