I have purchased a 70 chevelle 4 door.I plan on doing some basic mods including a H/C/I,shift kit and a Saturday night special converter in the power glide.I am trying to decide on either 3.42 or 3.73 gears.The cam I am going to use is the Crane 274 ho6.I plan on using a Holley 570 street avenger carb and a Weiand street warrior intake.Heads are going to be a set of 416 heads.Of course I will have headers and a 2.25 dual exhaust with an x pipe and flows.I feel this will be plenty for the 77,000 mile 307.I am not building a race car,just a cruiser.:thumbup:

I think putting a turbo 350 with stock converter(or small stall if budget allows) would be a better investment over a stall in a glide and gears. Nothing wrong with a 307. Dont be shy on the exhaust,2 1/2 is better.The only thing I didnt like about the 307 is they had a nylon gear on the camshaft.New timing set with the new cam will fix that. Other than that,just treat that engine likes its an under sized 327.

Yea,I know a th350 is better ,but I just wanna see what I can do with what I got rather than changing a whole lot.I need hardened seats for unleaded fuel hence the 416 heads.The cam is just for the lope and I figure the other parts will compliment it.

the 3 speed by itself will improve the car the most.A bigger cam in a glide car with near stock gears and it wont make much difference. Did the stock heads fail you already because of unleaded fuel?

No,but isn't it a given esp. with the crappy fuel they charge an arm and leg for these days!!?

first gear turbo 350 2.52x3.07=7.7:1 launch gear

power glide 1st gear- 1.72x3.73=6.4 launch gear

spending money on gears and high stall will just cut your fuel economy. might even slow the car down?

I'm gonna crawl under the car and check te numbers to see wat ratio is in the diff.This car as working R134 converted a/c and I was told that pg cars with air have 3.36 gears.

not all diffs are tagged with the ratio.Tou might have to do a gear oil change to find out.3.36 is not a terrible ratio couple with a 3 speed,and even better with a 4 speed auto as they have a 3:1 first gear ratio.
