I have a 1970 350 small block. The block has been machined, decked, linehoned, and bored to .030. I want to get as much HP and Torque out of this thing as I can and that includes stroking it. The engine has 4 bolt mains in it. I will be starting new with crank, rods, pistons, everything. I will not be using the stock heads, I have read in this forum they are too small.
Any advice?

the total flow of the heads will determine the max amount of power you can get,if all other parts match.A question to you is how much power do you want/need? dont pick a random number,tell us what you want the car to do,budget,application and how much driving you will do with this engine.

I do love the sound of a supercharger, and am sure it will boost HP and torque. I really don't care about budget on this engine. It goes into my deceased son's truck, and 1952 Chev 3100. I'm really thinking about supercharger. Will the stock block I have take this kind of power, or should I start out with a new block. I do want to stay with a small block, don't know why, guess I just like em.

Block failures are quite low compared to the rest of the engine parts. I wouldnt dwell on a block either.If you want a 600 hp small block then buy all the parts needed for 600 hp,dont limit yourself because you have 1 part you want to reuse. What I would do is first,decide what I want/need.Then I would make sure I have a proper home for the drive train.Then I would put in new complete drivetrain.example: when I built my engine,I bought a new tko 5 speed,new sfi approved flywheel,new clutch and scattershield,new posi carrier and gear set,new big block 1/2 shafts and improved u-joints.It took over a week to install everything. I still had to custom order the headers for the application and get an exhaust system built.Car was down for close to a month

1970 block

I am glad to hear block failures are rare. Now it's on to buying the pieces and parts to make it scream. Forged steel crank, steel H beam rods, internally balanced, forged pistons, and of course some very good heads. Don't know what brand yet, I need some input on this. I really think I will supercharge it just because I like supercharged engines.

boosted or normally aspirated will both need good gizards to live.The boost can take an engine and make 1.2 to 1.5 times as much power as normally aspirated.

so if you built a 396/383 making 1.25 horse power per cube,then the bosted version would make1.75 hp/cube or more.
do some math to see what you want Vs what you can afford. what ever you bolt that into will need premium suspension/tires/brakes and trans/diff.
If you put 675 plus hp in a stock car,something will break everytime you get into the throttle

1970 block

Its going into a 1952 Chevrolet 3100. It will have a custom frame with all updated new parts. I plan on buying a good roller to drop the beast into and transfer the body to it. This was my brothers truck. He committed suicide. My son ran down and bought it. He was killed, my only child, so I am going to make the absolute best street rod I can in memory of both of them. My brother had a 57 210 that he customized mildly and put in a hot 350 with a turbo 400. Tubed 23 inch wide tires in back, just a nice quality street rod. So there is the story. I just need input on what to do to get where I want to go with this project. I most definitely am going all out to make this project the absolute best I can.
I grew up in a body shop-my dad's profession- so I know my way around a vehicle. I am self taught in engine building and this will be my first supercharged engine. :thumbup:

at 600hp stock block failures are common. Would avoid H beams if you can, and get a modern supercharger, the advances in design have made a BIG differences.

A well built mild sbc with about 10 pounds of boost can easily make 600hp and be very driveable.

I do plan on the enjoyment part. I have a "vision" of what I want the truck to look like. No chopped top, but a channeled body! What they used to call "the supreme task". Not much of a channel, just enough to make the rear window level with the top of the box. LOTS OF WORK! Should be fun anyway and I will keep things posted.
