hello, i hope that santas helpers are here. im a first time user.
i have a motor from a 1977 dodge monaco. its a 440 and has 32000 miles on it and was running fine when i pulled it from the car. this is a lean burn system motor. the bottom of the carb is made of plastic.
i would like to put this motor in a 1970 plymouth road runner, and use the 1970 wireing. i also have the automatic transmission from the dodge monaco.
the rear gears on the road runner are 3.23
if i through away the dodge carb and distributor and get a holly and electronic ignition will this thing go. how about the cam will it be ok to leave it there or do i need to change that.
this will not be a drag race car. im looking for good gas mileage and long life. this will be my drive around town car.
thank you for your help.

I'm not a Mopar guy, but my Dad worked for Dodge. If I remember correctly, the lean burn system involved the Thermoquad and possibly the timing. When setting the carb, mechanics were supposed to inject propane into the carb, or some such thing. The Thermoquad should make a viable doorstop. Once you get it off there, I would treat it as a "normal" engine.

You will need to get rid of the carb,& distributor because of the lean burn system.
I had a Charger and changed the carb, intake & distributor and put headers on it. Woke it up a little, not much HP on those later motors.

The T/quad is a good carb when set up correctly if your after power, performance, and economy. A lot of guys dont like the T/quad because there just not familiar with them. I've had several on my RVs and have been happy with them. If you go with a stock Dodge dist then you will need the wiring and control module that comes out of the donor car.

The only part of the lean burn on the carb is the throttle position transducer and it is external. The plastic fuel bowls did tend to warp on those but they aren't a bad carb. One thing I like about them is you can easily adjust the secondary metering rods.
I had a good friend with a 71 340 Duster that had the original T-quad and it could whup anything around. It made more than one 440 six pack look like it was backing up, 454 chevelles too.

Those lean burn systems were a bugger to troubleshoot tho, as the factory proceedure would have you change the box and retest during the proceedure. Those boxes were expensive and the dealer always had to order them in. I fixed more than one with a points distributor. I would T off the vacuum line in a hidden place and leave all the old lean burn on there. I never had one fail an emissions test as they never looked inside the dist.
