You remove the oil cooler adapter, the oil filter adapter is bolted into the block’s machined cavity it is retained by 2 bolts with no gasket. The filter adapter‘s outer opening should sit over the supply hole of the block cavity. Output is with the center filter attachment screw. The adapter will be a little inset with the machined cavity, the filter will seal on the machined pad of the cavity. It really doesn’t matter what direction it’s installed but the mechanic community prefers having the bypass valve inboard toward the oil pan.
