okay so for my 1st drive of the 400 things seem a little weird. I have a powerglide and tci 24-2600 stall converter. the car didn't seem like it wanted 2 shift out of 1st for a very long time. I only averaged about 30mph the whole trip home. but being used 2 the 307 I could tell when it needed to shift. the car did shift out of 1st when I let off and got back in a few times. could the motor b looking for a certain rpm before it shifts into 2nd? I have a big 488/510 cam with 114 lsa. should I b worried about burning up the trans or something? the torque converter is fairly new.

do you have the throttle linkage for the powerglide hooked up?

That linkage affects shift timing.

The modulator on the powerglide affects line pressure

hyd flat tapp rpm range 3000-6500(rated350)
intake dur. 050 234/244
adv 292/302

I do believe its something with the throttle linkage. from what I see my dad left a spring hooked up to one of the valve cover bolts. I see a part where there loiks like the spring was supposed to go, but the spring is 2 big. think autozone will have wat I'm lookin 4?

having driven it a little more to understand the motor.
I can see it goes to about 40 in 1st. then I can let off and hear it go into second. in second when I press the brakes it can drop down to about 20 or so before it shifts back into first.

I LOVE THE 400'S TORQUE. I can let completely off the gas in 2nd and the car drops to idle it sounds like and just chugs along. I chugged along one road for about close to 2 miles @ 36-38 mph.
I have seen a 17 mile highway trip from work without the gas guage barely movig so I'm happy about those potentials.
I'm very grateful 2 be the driver of this car and will do my best 2 respect it and its power.

NEXT BIG FOCUS is gonna b TRACTION and beefing up the powerglide.
