It might. But there is bound to be some differences.
You would need to compare the PCM pinouts to see all are the same and present for all the sensors and solenoids .One may have A.I.R. and the other not. Sure to trip The Check engine light.
Also the difference in transmission controls could be a setback.
Differences in sensors as far as which ones are or are not used could also affect things in an adverse manner.
Lots of variables there, and then you have the Flash program. A whole nother ball game.
Even if it did plug in (which It will IIRC) chances are it wont run correctly and driveability will probably not be optimum, much less acceptable.
If youre trying to find a cheap replacement for the failed unit you have youre barking up the wrong tree.

2.2 liter change 96 t0 98

thanks, but don<t understand the statement, trying to go cheap, barking up wrong tree:confused: I am not trying a cheap way, I am going to do it right, and plan on spending as much as it takes, within reason. Ive been told that I might need to get an 98 ecu, just wanted some input. Thanks again

Just get the exact same ecu, its the only fool proof way to take care of it. Even then some models switch ecu stuff mid year so be sure everything matches. A good used one shouldn't be expensive though.

I was wondering if the reason your were changing the ecu was because their might be more H.P. programed into a 98? I have a 97 s10 w/2.2 and it is a real dog when it comes to H.P. And the reason is the ecu.I had to replace the head gasket about a yr. ago and did some porting to the head an even put on a turbo muff and got nothing out of it.Just wondering if this is what your doing.What I do know is the intake is different an so is the head.Im not sure but I read that the head isnt interchangable with 97,96,and so on.This may mean the ecu is different also,not sure though.

2.2 chevy engine swap

I got this pickup, and the motor had a rod through the block, found a 98 2.2 out od a cavilier. So far no one has been able to tell me if the head off on the orginal motor which I believe is a 95 will fit the 98 block. So I tried to just buy a motor, bad decission. Any way This 98 engine is rebuildable, but hate to spend the money if its not going to work, and be a contiuned money pit. Another thing is maybe to convert it back to the old dist, and do away with ecu. I,m a heavy equip mech, and not real up on these small motors, so I,m trying to get input from those of you that have had experience with this motor. I really want to thank you for your input. My apologies Norm. Just wasnt sure what you were trying to do.
I thought you were trying to use what you had laying around to fix your car.
If you need an ECM you can get remans. I send them to a place to have them rebuilt, sometimes. Often a salvage yard will have one with the right number on it for a good price too.
What exactly is the car doing that leads you to replace the PCM?

A head from a 95 wont work because Chevy made changes to the 2.2 in 98.They added roller rockers,a removable throttle body & a diff plenum.(spelled wrong) The head might bolt on but nothing elas is going to line up right.My 97,the head and throttle body are all one pices.I would rebuild it then get a 98 ecm & wiring harnesses from the j yard with a warrenty.

The orginal motor, threw a rod, and when I bought the pickup, the fellow had a 2.2 out of a 1998 cavalier, but it wasn,t all there, and it needed rebuilt. So I was trying to figure out if I could rebuild that motor, and use it in the trk. But after more research, I really need to stick to the same casting #, or as close as I can to it. So I guess I,ll take a chance, and see if I can find a used motor, that I can install in this trk. Thanks a lot for your interest, and if you have delt with any of the used motor companys out there ,and there are a lot, and know of one that is honest, please let me know. Thanks again, Norm;)
