I have a 229 v6 motor and would like to know what heads are compatible with it.
It already has a edelbrock cam kit.
It also has valve covers with bolts on the sides not in the centers and I havnt been able to find the head # on any list. 14020558
This is my first v 6 and plan to put it in a 1936 willys truck
Any help would be great.

The 1978-84 V6 90º Chevrolet 229 is a SBC 305 minus #3 and #6 cylinders. Just like 305, the 229 can be found w/two different intake valve sizes from the factory: 1.72" and 1.84". If you can find a set of 1.84" heads, use them. But there's little to be had by enlarging them to 1.94" unless the heads were going to be fully ported and enough cam used to justify the larger valve. The chamber volumes are similar to the 305 as well, around 58cc for the ones I've seen.

The 4.3L heads will have a larger volume but they could be milled down. If you are considering such a swap, use the Vortec (1996-up) 4.3L heads. If you're going to the trouble you might as well get the most bang for the buck, but the Vortec heads require a dedicated intake- again, just like a 305 would. Also they take center bolt valve covers.

Cams are different from the 4.3L as well as the crank and rods (and pistons, obviously), so don't try to swap too much 4.3L stuff onto the 229. Don't use a 4.3L distributor in the 229. engines have a "semi-even fire" sequence which alternates between 132º and 108º; the 4.3L V6 has an even fire sequence of 120º/120º/etc.

If you have a 4.3L, just use it- that will give you more power than the 229 ever could w/o spending BIG.;)
