I have a 31' ford with the original rear axle, I want to put in a 9" rear from my 1980 Ranger. Any ideas, blueprints or where to weld what bracket to what part of the frame knowledge out there to help, any help would help. I have looked through lots of posts and knowledge base only to come up empty.
Thanks

Most rodders with a Model A want a rear end that is 56 to 58 inches wide measured this way.

Unless the Ranger rear has been narrowed.........it will be too wide for most people's idea of what looks good.

The idea rear for a Model IMHO is a early V8 Maverick. It's a 8 inch, has the common Ford car wheel pattern and is easy to get brake parts and pieces for.

IF you want the Ford truck/early Ford wheel pattern ( 5 on 5.5 ) then I suggest a early Ford Bronco. It's a 9 inch and will stand more HP and abuse. The width is 58 inches. I have one under my 32 Ford.

What type of suspension are you wanting to put under the Model A ?

1) buggy spring
2) coil over w/ 4 bars
3) leafs

A Model A has a 103 and 1/2 inch wheelbase.

Thanks for the info, I have not considered the axle width in my planning.
I started rebuilding the 80' ranger several yrs ago and put on new rotors replaced rear drum with disk brakes and rebuilt the axle. Time went by and I decided to start on the model A, instead of finishing the ranger. Seeing that I already had both stripped down to the frame I was going to use what I could from the ranger the 302, c6 trans., and the 9" rear including the suspension. I have several years experience in building oilfield vehicles, equipment and swamp buggies, so cutting modifying and welding is not a problem, but if its too much trouble than what its worth I'll start looking elsewhere.

What type of suspension are you wanting to put under the Model A ?

3) leafs
This is a good question I'm not sure, any advise?

1) buggy spring.......... based on the original Model A design. Uses a leaf spring setup like what came on the A ........with some bars run forward to the frame to locate the rear.

2) coil overs with 4 bars..............2 bars on the top and 2 on the bottom and suspended by the coil springs with shocks inside. Can be done with the 4 bars parallel and a pan hard bar or with the bars angled (like a 69 Chevelle) so no bar needed.

3) Leafs................like what came on the Ranger. This is the easiest of the three... but looks like junk to me.

IF you have all the $$$ spent on the Ranger rear........just narrow it.
