350 to 383, QUESTIONS

ok so im a little lost, i know a 383 is a 350 with the 400 rods and the 400 crankshaft, but what would it be if i bored it 0.30 over and instead of 8-1 compression i had 9.3-1? PLEASE HELP! All comments much appreciated

The formula for cubic inches is bore x bore x stroke x number of cylinders x .7854. This will give your answer.

Connecting rods and compression have no effect on cubic inches.

P.S. a 350 block cannot be bored .30 over, .030 over is what your looking for.

Thats how most 383s used to be made with the stock 400 crank and rods. Now a days its easier and cheaper just to use an aftermarket crank, 5.700" rods and pistons with the correct compression height.

You'll have a slightly bigger engine. Do the math with the formula I gave you in my last post if you want to know what size it will be.

In order to help increase the useful life of the block only have ithe block bored the necessary amount to restore the cylinders then order the correct size pistons based on the the work the machine shop has done.

There is a LOT to building a 383

And whether you .030 over or .060 over is just the beginning. I learned a LOT building mine, and spend a LOT of money to get it right. But then... I got a BAD *** engine... hahaha

ok so i think i got it straight, ill be using a 3.750 stroke crank with 5.700 length rods and 383 pistons with 9.5-1 compression and a .060" bore :thumbup: sound good ? ? ?

Im obviously still pretty new to this but i appreciate the help guys

compression ratios

good target plan. Here's the deal, though.. your compression ratio is entirely dependent on the heads and gasket thickness, then calculate which pistons to use. there are lots of "calculators" on the web to come up with your "cc allowance" for the pistons. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy the Summit or Jegs FULL 383 stroker kit, including the crank, pistons, rods, rings, etc.

get your head before you do anything else and decide what you will be doing with them before settling on pistons.

Has the machine shop already machine or looked at the block? How do you know you need .060 over pistons? Are your pistons designed to be used with 5.7" rods?

I think you need to pick up some books and start reading about basic engine rebuilding.

i know .060 over is a big bore but thats what ill be able to get my hands on but no i hasnt been bored so ill need to have them bore it see what im at then go from there and yes the pistons are made for the rods

I have a 1988 350 sbc and i was wondering if its worth it ($$$$) to make it a 383? i believe it will run me about 550-600$ for everything.(friend doing the labor) motor will be completely rebuilt and have some performance parts such as rpm intake manifold full exhaust headers back magnum cam 270H maybe bigger ect...

A 350 with 3.75 stroke, bored .060 over is a 388 not a 383. You also need 3.75 stroke pistons for whichever rod you decide to use, 5.7" or 6", they're different compression heights.

Some info that may help you is here, and here.

What are you putting the engine in? Is it set up for the power the engine will make, or if not are you budgeting enough for those changes that are inevitably needed when installing a high performance engine?

And why a 383 and not a 350 in the first place? If there is a good 350 crank already on hand, you can make a 350/355 SBC that will make good power and cost less than a stroker SBC.
