Hello,

I am looking at a vehicle that has a rebuilt 350 Chevy block in it. They said it won't start. It doesn't even turn over, or click, or make any noise. It's not the battery, as lights do come on, and they've tried different batteries. I'm thinking this could be an issue with the starter. Before I purchase it (won't have time to replace or pull out the starter to test before deciding to purchase), what other issues could this be? I know, a can of worms, but just trying to get a general idea of what I might be getting myself into. :D

Missing engine ground is a possibility if this happened after installing the engine. Could be a number of wiring issues. An easy test would be to jump the s terminal on the starter to the large stud on the starter. This should run the starter. If it doesn't either it is not grounded or it is no good. The s terminal is the small terminal on the starter and if there is more than 1 small terminal it is the one closest to the block. Could be as simple as they put the purple start wire on teh wrong terminal

What kind of vehicle is it. More info would be helpful

Thank you. The owner rebuilt the engine then drove from AZ to FL and back. Then, they got busy and it's just been sitting for 2 years.

I'll be honest, it's not a hotrod. I'm in this forum because everything I've read, everyone is super helpful and knowledgeable. It's a 1977 Superior Pacemaker. It's a short bus.

Obviously, with it sitting for 2 years, so much could be wrong. But the wires all look to be good (no critters have eaten them). They just replaced the fuel pump last month. But they don't want to deal with getting under the bus to pull the starter out to test it. But it seems that's the place to start.

You don't need to pull it to test it. Jump the terminals as i stated and see if it cranks. if it has been sitting a while you may want to give the starter a few raps with a small hammer or other tool with a little weight to it. Sometimes the brushes get a lillte corrosion and a good smack will free them. If you have a helper have them hold the key in teh start position while you hit the starter.

they rebuilt it (?) and drove it ? Then parked it for 2 years ? I am not buying any of that. Here is what I would tell them. Get it running then call me otherwise offer them a price minus the cost of a crate motor because for all you know the motor is junk ! :mad:

I'm with Cape Cod Bob. Buying a unit with a fresh rebuild that won't turn over???? Tell them to get it running or figure you need a motor - anything more is a heck of a risk. Perhaps it's fine, but who rebuilds a motor and parks it? Seems either senseless or fishy to me.
