Hey guys, finally have my own place with a garage and can start building an engine for a sleeper. Still not sure what vehicle. Thinking a 1988 Lincoln Town Car. Nothing wrong with riding in comfort. Lol. Anyways, what I want is to build a 350 sbc pushing 500+ hp. Ive looked into it and found supercharged builds that will make that power for $4000 but it wont be much of a sleeper with carbs sitting over the hood. Can anybody help and give descriptive responses with parts, specifications, etc? I want it to have the ability to be an everyday driver. Gas mileage doesn't matter, but I would like to keep the overall cost under $5000 for just the engine.

Change your platform, or go LS with a snail.
You can build a traditional SBC stroker and hit around 500hp in your 5K budget, but its going to take some compromise in reliability, and street ability.
Then figure out your fuel system in a car that only came injected
Then mounts, electrics, etc etc. Your 5k budget is a drop in the bucket of what you will need to spend. And the peaky high strung nature of a 500hp SBC isn't going to be much fun in a 4500# tank.
Soooo.... all that being said, if you have to do the fabrication and just have to use the big cruiser, then you may as well find a junkyard 5.3 and hit it with boost, same work getting it in and running, and you can make ungodly power with the right mix and matching of short block and heads mixed with an eBay GT45.

sorry, 88 town car is one big tank.. a 500hp 350 is going to give up way to much low end to get that tank rolling.. rethink this.. you need foot pounds down low and many of them.. I'd thing a ford 390/460 would be the way to go.. not as cheap as a small block 350.. but it'll be faster off the line if you get it to hook.. good luck..
me I'd piss off everyone and drop a catty 500 or 472 in it..

Okay, well the Town Car was just something rolling around in my head, I'd like to stick to a sbc. I have a 1984 Chevy C-10 Long Bed sitting around the house in good condition. The 350 is a two bolt main with a TH-350. Let me throw this out there, what would it take to turn my pickup into a ******, fun little truck that nobody expects? Do i need a four bolt? I still would like the 500hp. Lets take away the spending limit and now tell me what I need.

the 2 bolt block is better but at an honest 500hp I'd add splayed main caps.. I'd also get a 383 stroker crank kit.. it's be easier to get to 500hp and more streetable.. and still be under 5k

Ive heard about people getting 383 crank kits, and they said they had to get the block cleared. Is that always a necessity? My block came out of a 1992 Chevy 1/2 ton.

Yes it varies by individual block some needing more than others. Typically the pan rail and the cylinder extensions into the crankcase need a little grinding. Capscrew style rods tend to minimize this sometimes eliminating the need completely but you don't know for sure till the parts are in your block as some blocks are a little wider on the pan rail than others and some pull the cylinder spigot a little deeper into the crankcase. This not only varies by casting number but by individuals within a casting number so you just can't tell till it comes to together.

406 Gen 1 smallblock or 6L LS motor with a turbo or S/C. The LS platform usually sits a little lower, its one of the reasons why they went to it from the LTx platform.

You want FAST? Swap a 460/C6 with 10" 2500 stall converter into an MGB Roadster with a narrowed 9" and 3.50 cogs and an Auburn locker. Bolt on a set of 18" tires and hold on.

What Tech is saying, and your mocking, is that your build isn't doable on your budget, you want a "fast" sleeper, in a big car....I get that, I'm a giant guy, I love my big car....but your not going to make it fast with a SBC and a 5k, or even 10k budget.....
So he is giving you a simple example of budget fast....small package, big motor..... he is right.
If you wanna stick with your budget, use a 460 Ferd motor and the C6, blow through Carb, and a single turbo.
It will all fit under your hood, it can be quiet, and will make it "fast".....
This guy has it right, on a budget,

The point tech was making is your c-10 isn't all that much lighter than the town car my 71 c-10 is 4039 ish pounds a 84 is going to be close to 4800 give or take.. the town car is about that give or take a 100lb

The problem you are going to have is to get a 350 c.i.d. engine to push north of 500 hp you move the power curve up the rpm range. That means the engine is a dog under 3000-3500 rpm.. and in a heavy car/truck it becomes a slug.. ya it'll go like a bat outta hell after you get to 3500rpm..
even a 383 at 500hp will be a tad soggy in the lower end, heavy needs TORQUE to move it.. not hp. A383 with a hairdrier or two, will make for a mighty fast/quick vehicle but not for 5000.oo ,
Yes you might get the engine together and running for 5000.oo but the trans won't live behind it, nor will the driveshaft or the rear end..
Making 500hp is the easy part.. getting it to the ground without extra parts hitting the ground is the trick..
And to be honest, an honest 400hp 380ft lb 350 or 383 will cost 3500-5000 depending on what you use.. will be hard enough to get to the pavement without breaking stuff or the tires just going up in smoke..

Ive driven a 440 hp/ 360 lb/ft torque 1967 Mercury Cougar that my dad and i built a couple years back. Still waiting on the day he gives me the keys for good. Lol. Big Ford is out. Ill stick to what I already have, my C10.

C-10 quick and reliable?
Build a 450-500 hp 454,the best o-drive automatic and 5.38 gears.It will melt tires,accelerate well for a big truck and be somewhat drive able with an over drive
