1977 sbc rebuilt, engine rotates for about 5-6 seconds and then makes a grinding noise. Starter is brand new. Sounds like its coming from starter area? Engine was never primed and has timing issues. I dont want to keep trying to start it because Im worried about causing damage. Any ideas what the noise could be??

pull the plugs before rotating again. get a drill and prime pump to check circulation of oil.If oil circulates well the rotate engine on starter with plugs out(after a few rotations by hand) If noise continues, check back, see if you feel it when rotation by hand or if it is the starter

Because the starter is new and it is a SBC...did you replace any starter shims when you installed the new starter? Take off your inspection cover that protects the fly wheel and watch how the starter engauges...it may be throwing the drive gear on the starter out to far and cause the starter drive to come in contact with the ring gear...if that's the case, pick up some stater shims and bring the starter out further in order to get proper contact with the ring gear.

Oh, and welcome to the site, hope this helps.
