When doing away with the computer on a '94 vortec 4.3 engine, how can I still use the computerizied distrubutor? I was told that all that I needed was to keep the coil wire to the dist. module hooped up and forget the otherside of the module, then run a hot wire to the coil, set the timing to about 18deg. and fire it up and go. Will this work or not? It sounds a little screwy to me.

It will run...

BUT have no performance..It will have no EST, which controls the timing advance/ retard..which is needed to "Keep up" with the changing demands of the engine.

You need to go to a pre 1980 GM HEI, or an aftermarket with advance features..(either vacuum or electronic, or mechanical) The pre 80's HEI is the cheapest route..

You need to use a "conventional" HEI distributor for the 4.3L V6. There are aftermarket units, or you can use a distributor from a 1985 Astrovan. They used a carb and conventional HEI. Do not use a 200-229 Chevy V6 distributor as they aren't even fire. The computer controlled unit won't work.

Thanks for the replies. but there is not enought room for the HEI. If I cannot get the orginal to work I will have to go aftermarket. The fellow who said it would work races his, he said he used about 36deg. advance for it. If that's true or not I do not know.

Doc, the 4.3 was not made before '80. The 229 and 231 will not work I am told. The early 4.3 dist. were big, like all the HEI's.

I have read some threads from a guy called Ignition Man. He seems to have done something with these but I don't know what. Thanks.

MSD has some good solutions for this..go to their website and have a look at the product line..

ALSO, the guy your talking about is Dave's Small body HEI's in Nevada, just do a search under that and go to his site for what he provides..
