I have a 1979 chevy nova 2 dr sedan and i would like to install 4 pt harnesses all the way around. I have seen it done to the rear bench seats before and that is not my problem. I want to know if i need new front bucket seats in the front. Mine are not the original seats, they are a little taller and have an ajustable headrest, however they are not the racing seats you usaully see with 4pt harnesses(i.e. with to shoulder height holes in the seat). If not how would i instal the harnesses, would i bolt them to the back of the seat or elsewhere.

My understanding of harnesses is fairly limited, I know that a harness is designed to keep you in one spot regardless of whats happening. i.e braking hard, cornering, or, gasp, rolling your car at 100mph. With this in mind, if you bolt that harness to the back of your seat you might as well wrap it around your neck, 'cause it'll be as effective as not wearing any harness or seat belt what so ever. In my opinion the only spot to bolt (securely) a harness is to a roll cage, or at the very least the rear deck lid. Bear in mind doing this will not allow for passengers in the rear seats. If you opt for the rear deck, I would use a couple of steel plates to laminate the steel of the deck lid and run the bolt trough both steel plates, cause trust me the steel on your deck is not thick enough to keep the bolt from ripping out under stress.

so in this picture, where are the harnesses bolted in? only logical place seems to be the seat or the floor...
edit: the shoulder parts, obviously the bottom ones are on the ground.

in the pic it's bolted to the nice roll cage you see in the backround, probably your best shot. second best would be to do what forkliftguy said and ditch the rear seats and bolt it up back there- this is what i'm doing for the time being. now you could also use a secure floor panel if you want to reinforce it, but this isn't on par with a roll cage setup. bolting it to the seats themselves is a no-no. the point of the seatbelt is to stop you from becoming a projectile, if your kinetic energy's transfered to the seat, both you and the seat will become one big automotive missile real quick.

Ricerx is right. It's bolted to the roll cage. I edited your photo (bear in mind I enlarged it quite a bit so quality got degraded). I zoomed in on the drivers seat, in the white rectangle you will see the right shoulder belt where it exits the seat's belt passage, from this you can see that it travels right into the back of the car. In the small white circle you can see that it's path leads to the roll cage.

OK, I just discovered I have no idea how to post that image up, so if anyone want's to tell me how, I'll gladly edit this post to accommadate the pic. Thanx.

ok thanks for the help but one last question.
is it possible to bolt the harnesses to the floor directly behind the front seats? This is my last hope because i have no roll cage and i am not removing the rear seat. Thanks...

I know it's jus killin' ya to put four harnesses in that car but I don't think it's gonna happen, not to say that it's not possible, I just don't see how yet. As far as bolting it to the floor right behind your seat: DON'T DO IT <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> . The best way that I can describe the dynamics involved in a collision is relatively simple, well, not really but get ready for it anyways. This involves a little interaction from your part.

First things first: Grab a belt, anykind, even the one from around your pants. Make sure it is buckled so you have a closed loop. Now step on the belt with both of your feet keeping your feet side by side as close to each other as possible. Now picture your right foot as being your hips' pivot point when seated in your car. And consider your left foot the anchor point of the shoulder belts of your harness. Take your right hand and hold the other part of the belt up nice and tight. You should now have a complete loop right? Keep in mind this reprents pretty closely the setup you are thinking of. Notice how no matter how tight you hold that belt you can still move your right hand to the right (simulating your body moving forward in your seat).

Second part: Stay standing in the same position with both feet in the belt and your right hand still holding the belt, but this time move your left foot to the left about 1'and readjust your right hand to be above your right foot again (Oh yeah, by the way your right hand represents your shoulders). Again, hold the belt tight and try pulling your hand to the right again. Notice how the belt is not allowing your hand to move as easily.

If this was your body in a crash having 10G's of force applied to it (the equivalent of an 80 mph collision), and let's say you weigh 180lbs, that means you are now exerting 1800lbs (yes,one thousand eight hundred pounds) of force to your harness. You would have become a human accordion.

Hi,

I too have this same request. I got a 66 comet (2 dr sedan with rear seats) and current have lap belts all the way around. My desire is to have 4 pt seat belts all around BUT without a roll bar and preserving the rear seating.
Now a question. My daily driver truck (02 avalanche) has seats with an integrated seat belt shoulder harness. So the seat belt is "bolted" to the seat back. Apparently, for these seats DOT approves it and probably safe as anything. Also, I've seen alot of convertible cars with the same type integrated seats.
So, my idea is why not buy a racing seat and just bolt the shoulder parts up to the top/back part of the seat. Assuming these racing seats are just as strong as these OEM seats...they better be, seeing as they are called "racing" seats.
Or another idea is to go to my junkyard and find used seats with these integrated seat belt should harness and just put those into my 66 comet. A 3 pt selt belt is certainly better than a lap belt

Bolting shoulder harnesses to the floor is a big No No. Check out some of the mfgs web sites and they will have warnings about that. It seems that any angle greater than 30* (attaching them to the floor would be 90*) and you could break your back or receive severe spine damage in an accident. Also I have a RCI 4 point harness set up I my 74 Corvette and it really limits your forward movement. I can barely touch the radio and wiper controls. :thumbup:
